Halloween is Not
Just for Kids!
Valerie Gillies
Editor, Lucknow Sentinel
Halloween is not just for
the young, but the young at
heart. After the little ones
had made their rounds, the
"mature" kids began congre-
gating at the Lucknow
Legion Pub Night on Octo-
ber 31, 2014.
Spooky backdrops made
ideal photo stations as the
various gouls and getups
began mingling. The King
of Hearts presided over the
evenings events with a
sheriff and a priest in the
crowd to keep things from
getting out of hand. Most
attendees were obvious
human specimens, but
there were some grim crea-
tures in mix.
One of the topics of dis-
cussion during the even-
ing was the differences
noticed from Halloween
festivities of yesteryear
compared to today. The
schools no longer have a
party in every room with
costume parades through
the halls. Trick or treating
is much different than it
was in the smaller rural
communities of another
generation when people
used to write down names
of those who stopped by
and sometimes asked for
a song or some other sort
of entertainment such as
riddles before doling out
the goodies. Trick or
treaters did not go as far
afield. The overall feel
was that Halloween has
lost ground to the politi-
cally correct society of
today. It seems so many

of the celebrations and
special days that provided
such wonderful memories
during childhood are
being eroded in the effort
to not offend.
Halloween of 2014 will
be remembered as very
cold, damp and extremely
windy with the threat of
snow in the air. That did
not stop those who love a
chance to dress up and let
their imaginations and
creativity come to life as a
whole new being.
Legacy of "Amputees Helping Amputees"
War Amps Addresss Label
Ar Mailing to Ontario Residents
Submitted
The War Amps 2014
address labels are being
mailed to Ontario residents
starting the week of October
27. The theme, "Sharing the
Legacy," pays tribute to the
link between those who
helped start the Association
and those who will carry it
into the future.
Jenna, 16, is a right leg
amputee and member of The
War Amps Child Amputee
(CHAMP) Program. In a let-
ter accompanying the
address labels, she writes
about her special friendship
with Bert, a Second World
War veteran who lost his leg
after stepping on a landmine
in Italy.
It was amputee war veter-
ans such as Bert who created
CHAMP, which provides
financial assistance for artifi-
cial limbs and holds regional
seminars every year for child
amputees like Jenna.
The pair have a tradition
of laying a wreath together,
on behalf of The War Amps,
at their local Remembrance
Day Ceremony. Bert says he
is comforted to know Jenna
will continue to spread the
message of Remembrance
and carry on The War Amps
legacy of "amputees help-
ing amputees."
