NEWS Dungannon Women's Institute Celebrates 100th Anniversary Valerie Gillies The Dungannon Women's Institute celebrated their 100th Anniversary at the Dungannon Senior's Hall on May 13, 2014. A large crowd enjoyed the festivities among displays that included many artifacts such as 2 hand - embroidered signature quilts, many photographs, minute books, quilt block books, antique dolls and most importantly the Tweedsmuir Histories. Throughout the program, many gave their reminis- cences, spoke of history, as well as humourous stories of their experiences in and study of the Women's Insti- tute. Of note was an enter- taining and informative mon- ologue delivered by Dungannon WI President Debbie Bauer in which she donned a black shawl and spoke as if she personified the Dungannon chapter to give the 100 years of history. Guest speaker, Dave Yates, is a local historian and gave more insights into what women's groups through the years have accomplished and the Women's Institutes across Canada in particular, espe- cially in their influence in changing laws and regulations. Sadly, this occasion marked the end of an era, as after the last meeting to be held in June, the Dungannon Women's Institute will merge with Auburn. As Bauer stated, "This is not really an ending, just another stage of growth we are going through."
