Madill Track and Field Season Begins
Athletes Compete
in 2 Meets
Maureen Lisle
Practices this spring season have
been challenging. With the cold, late
spring, runners have used streets, being
unable to train on the snow covered
track until the end of April. Throwers
used snow shovels to dig discus and
shots out of snow banks at practices.
Jumping pits have resembled mud pits
so jumpers have trained indoors.
Despite the handicap of a reluctant
spring, the Madill track team has met
the challenges with creativity and deter-
mination. Practices started the begin-
ning of March and the many athletes
have trained hard to prepare for the
season ahead.
The Mustangs kicked started their
season with the Forest City Meet (Lon-
don) and the Strathroy Meet. Both com-
petitions were large with 1500 athletes
from many schools in southwestern
Ontario taking part. Despite extremely
cold temperatures at the London meet
and extremely wet conditions at Strath-
roy, Madill athletes had some excellent
results.
In London, Madill athletes achieved
12 'personal best' perfomances and
placed 8 people in the top 6 results in
various events. Mitch Ward won second
in Midget Boys javelin when he threw
the implement 35.25m. Team mate
Karissa Schiestel also fared well in jun-
ior girls discus earning 3rd when she
hurled it 25.67m. On the track, Lyndon

At the Strathroy Meet, thirty Madill
athletes earned 17 'personal best' per-
formances and 9 athletes placed in the
top 6 in their individual events. Midget
Boys, Ben Newell and Mitch Ward won
the top two places in discus. Ward also
won a second in the javelin event.
Another second was earned by a new-
comer to the team, Sarah Alton, in Jun-
ior Girls discus. Anthony Vader also
won 3rd in a deeply talented field of
Senior Boys javelin (42.88m). Due to
flooded pits, some of the long and triple
jumpers were unable to compete. The

allowing them to work on their baton
exchanges. Several teams showed
promise. Due to the lateness of the
meet, the Senior Boys were unable to
compete in their 4X100m relay. They
are looking forward to being able to
race at the upcoming meet at St. Anne's
C.S.S.
The Madill track and field team is
encouraged about the season that lies
ahead. Next they prepare to compete at
the St. Anne's Invitational Meet held in
Clinton on May 6. The following week,
the team competes at the Huron Perth
Championships held at St. Anne's Tues.
May 13 and Wed. May 14. At this meet
the top 6 in each event qualify for the
WOSSAA Championships held the next
week at the University of Western
Ontario in London.
