Support Guide Dog School
To the Editor:
In the very near future Lucknow &
District Lions will sponsor a Walk for
Guide Dogs. We are asking the commu-
nity for their support for this event. By
bringing a pledge sheet and walking
your dog you will help support a very
worthy cause.
Helping the blind is what Lions is all
about. We support the Guide Dog School
that is run by Lions Foundation of Can-
ada which is in Oakville. In the past years
the Lucknow Lions Club has raised thou-
sands of dollars for this worthy cause. To
raise and train a dog it takes $25,000.00.
The dogs working career is approximately
6 to 7 years. Once you have a dog you
have one for life.
Dogs are no longer trained only for
Seeing Eye Dog Guides. They have added
five additional categories which are:
Autism Assistance Dog Guides pro-
vide a calming relief for children in
high anxiety situations.
Seizure Response Dog Guides will
bard for help, are able to activate an
alert system and provide comfort after
a seizure.
Hearing Ear Dog Guides respond to
sounds such as an alarm clock, phone,
doorbell or fire alarms ringing.
Special Skills Dog Guides open and
close doors for physically disabled,
retrieve dropped items and get help
when needed, and
Diabetic Alert Dog Guides bark for
help, able to activate alarm systems,
retrieve food, and provide comfort after
a hypoglycaemic episode. (Type I
Diabetes).
Some people believe that the dogs
can detect when a seizure will happen

but these dogs are very rare.
The best thing about the
Lions Program is that when
you need a dog they are pro-
vided to you free of charge.
The Lions Clubs of Canada,
corporate sponsors, private
individuals and other serv-
ices clubs provide the funds
to operate this organization.
They get no government
assistance so you can see
how important it is for you
to help us out.
If you wish to participate
in the Walk for Guide Dogs
or make a donation please
feel free to contact a Lions
member in your community
of check the advertisement
in this paper. You never
know when a member of
your family will need
assistance.
