Mother Nature doesn't wait for the
storm to pass.
Fortunately, for a pregnant woman in
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, two
paramedics pushed through the fierce
storm to help at a critical time.
James Janssen and Tharon Riley
arrived after a 36 -minute tumultuous
drive on Jan. 7 to find a woman in
labour. Schools were cancelled, roads
were closed but the paramedics helped
deliver a baby that morning.
"Generally paramedics are called to
attend scenes of traumatic injury or
sudden medical emergencies," EMS
deputy chief Jeff Horseman told Huron
County council during a ceremony to
honour the first responders.
"Once in a while we are able to attend
a call that reminds us how we can also
be a part of a life changing event with a
happy ending."
Both mom and baby girl, Mary, were
healthy and happy after the at-home
birth. A midwife made it to the resi-
dence a short time later.

Deputy EMS chief Jeff Horseman and Huron County Warden Joe Steffler flank James Janssen and Tharon
Riley, who received congratulatory certificates and a stork pin for helping deliver a baby at a residence in
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh in January.
Horseman said supervisors were trying to figure
out how to get staff members to work that day.
Another ambulance was stuck in a snowdrift trying
to respond to a call. Horseman and Warden Joe
Steffler presented Janssen and Riley with certifi-
cates of recognition and the Traditional stork pin.
Reid's Corners WI meet for March
The March meeting of the Reid's Cor-
ners Women's Institute was held with
President Sharon Courtney opening the
meeting with a reading, followed by the
Ode and Collect.
Roll Call was answered by reading of
an item from one of the Tweedsmuir
History books, all of which were most
interesting.
Our historian, Ruth Anne Hollands
does an excellent job with these books.
Plans were made for the lunch booth at
Murray Ferguson's farm sale coming up
April 5. Also, there are a few tickets left
for the musical, "Sound of Music" in
June. Contact Joan Wand if interested in
going. Mention was also made about
the "Roots of Bruce" to be held April
9-11 in Walkerton.
