The Nuclear Waste Management
Organization held a two-day open house
at the Lucknow Community Centre
Wednesday and Thursday last week
hoping to hear comments from the pub-
lic and educate the people about what
the repository is and what it would
entail. The project is in the very early
stages of development.
Lisa Frizzell, NVVMO director of cor-
porate affairs, said that Huron -Kinloss is
still in phase one of the project investi-
gations. Phase one includes "Desktop
studies" which evaluate whether Huron -
Kinloss is an appropriate location for the
site. But don't think that time is flying in
the case of deciding where the project
should go. There are nine phases.
"Huron Kinloss is one of 15 commu-
nities involved in learning more about
the process," said Frizzell. "We're still
many years from selecting a site. But
we're in the process right now of doing
some preliminary assessment studies in
the area and so we're sharing informa-
tion about what that involves and hear-
ing from residents about what questions
they have if they have concerns or com-
ments that they want to share. The site
selection process is still in the pretty
early stages of the process right now.
There will be, as we, continue through
with communities studies get increas-
ingly more detailed. Eventually we hope
to narrow it down to maybe one or two
sites and those would go through
detailed site evaluations."
The slow process of deciding and eval-
uating communities is for safety.
"Safety is first and foremost. It abso-
lutely has to go in a place where we can
demonstrate that it's safe. It also can
only go in a place with an informed and
willing host. So what that means is that
we won't impose it on any community.
Communities won't really be in that
position to make that decision until they
have all the information that comes
through the years of studies and engage-
ment," said Frizzell.
There is approximately two million
bundles of used nuclear fuel that needs
to be stored.
"If you stacked them like hardwood,
they would fill six NHL sized hockey
rinks up to the boards," Frizzell said.
She said the repository could include
upwards of 1,000 workers from con-
struction to monitoring the repository
and is between $16 to $24 billion
project.
