Listen to your heart
Dear Editor:
February is Heart Month and
this month, over 1,400 Heart and
Stroke Foundation canvassers
went door to door in Grey and
Bruce counties in our annual
campaign. A most heartfelt thank
you to all of our volunteers for
your dedication and efforts, par-
ticularly with our brutal February
weather!
Over the past 60 years - thanks
to the work of the Heart and
Stroke Foundation and our part-
ners - the death rate from heart
disease and stroke in Canada has
declined by more than 75 per
cent. Forty per cent of this
decrease has occurred in the last
decade alone. Still, there are 1.6
million Canadians living with the
effects of heart disease and
stroke.
With the Olympics still fresh in
everyone's mind, the personal
story of two-time Olympic figure
skating medalist Isabelle Brasseur
is one that the Heart and Stroke
Foundation highlighted this year.

has vasodepressor syncope, a
congenital heart condition that
has caused her heart to stop as a
result of extreme physical exer-
tion or stress. She became preg-
nant in 2000 and when doctors
discovered her baby was in
breech position, they scheduled a
C-section. During the procedure
Isabelle went into cardiac arrest.
Her doctors reacted quickly by
administering a surge of adrena-
line to start her heart, and both
she and her daughter survived.
Advances made possible by Heart
and Stroke Foundation research
have allowed Isabelle to manage
her condition and become one of
the growing number of heart dis-
ease survivors.
In 2013, the Heart and Stroke
Foundation helped create 165,000
survivors and since its inception
has invested more than $1.39 bil-
lion in heart and stroke research
to date.
While we hope to get all of can-
vassing done during February, it's
not always possible. When a
Heart and Stroke Foundation
canvasser arrives at your door,
please give generously. If they've
already knocked on your door,
thank you for your continuing
generosity.
Sincerely,
Carol Potter, Area Manager

Plans for a gathering place
Dear Editor:
We would like to update the sur-
rounding communities on the St.
Joseph's Kingsbridge Community's
(SJKC) quest to purchase the
former St. Joseph's Church in
Kingsbridge. Our plan to develop a
community hub for a gathering
place and rental space, as well as a
local venue for music and cultural
events, continues to progress.
Many of your readers will recog-
nize the big red church just north
of Goderich on Highway 21. Built
in 1905, this landmark for travelers
has a tremendous historical signifi-
cance not only to our local
community, but also to all of Huron
County. The towering church spire
stands tall as a testament to the
determination and ingenuity of
rural Huron County's early
settlers.
Thanks in part to the endorse-
ment of support from our munici-
pality of ACW, our application for
charitable status is currently under
review at Revenue Canada. Our
capital campaign is progressing
well, but we are still in need of
additional pledges of funds to
improve the building.
We continue to have our com-
munity gatherings in our tempo-
rary site of the former St Joseph's
Kingsbridge school. These gather-
ings include non -denominational
prayer services, card parties, and
as well as a St Patrick's Day hooten-
anny and an Easter Celebration.
We invite everyone to visit our
website at www.stjosephskings-
bridge.com to learn more about
our organization's endeavor and
activities. Our entire winter /spring
schedule of upcoming social events
is also listed on this site.
We appreciate all the support we
continue to receive, helping us pre-
serve and develop this valuable
community asset. If you have any
questions feel free to contact me,
Jim Van Osch, at 519 529 1051.
Hope to see you at some of our
events!
