"Many managers and supervisors expressed that they were finding it difficult to link their work to the three existing pil- lars which are program based, while at the same time, discussions were taking place between senior administration and trustees about finan- cial challenges impacting the board," Director of Education Steve Blake told trustees. Decreased provincial funding due to declining enrolment continues to pose challenges for the board, who last week rec- ommended that a pro- posed $192 million dollar budget for the 2014-15 school year be approved at the board's next regu- lar meeting June 17. The fourth pillar, Blake added, would focus on "being accountable for the responsible steward- ship of resources" and would encourage all lev- els of staffing to create alignment of human and financial resources through both short and long term planning, as well as maximizing operational efficiencies, including the use of instructional spaces to enhance program oppor- tunities for students. The other three pillars in the board's strategic plan, which is due for review in 2015, include creating an environment that promotes high expectations for all stu- dents, encourages parent engagement and ensures the well-being of stu- dents and staff in a safe, supportive environment for teaching, learning and working. The board has agreed to the addition of the fourth pillar as a working draft until the strategic plan is revised next year. Close Finish in Crokinole District 55+ Senior Games Submitted For the past several weeks men and women 55+ have been compet- ing in local and district senior games hoping to place in the top 3 to win a medal. Local crokinole players are part of these games. Finishing first in the Brockton (local games) was Peter Carter (Teeswater) and his part- ner Robert Bonnett (Wingham), second place was Jo -Ann Carter (Teeswater) and Al Carter (Formosa) and third place went to Fran- cis Zettler (Walkerton) and Len Zettler (Cargill). These 3 teams played Thursday afternoon, June 5, 2014 at the Han- over Seniors Club as part of the District 27 Games. A total of ten teams played in a round robin competition and they included Clare Kuepfer and Cathy Duepfer representing Owen Sound, Linda Scott and Mary Farrel (Kincardine), Ross McLeod and Bernie Bender (Hanover), Neil Cook and Carol Cook (Hanover), Jim Barbour and Alan Jardin (Sau- geen Shores), Wally Hill and Gloria Hill (Sau- geen Shores) and Orval Kalinowski and Walter Atton (Chesley). The competition was keen as some of the play- ers are good friends play- ing at both the Scone and Hanover Clubs as well as competing against each other in tournaments. When the score sheets were tallied it was the husband and wife team of Neil and Carol Cook winning the first place Gold Medals, Peter Carter and Robert Bon- net second place Silver Medals and Orval Kalinowski and Walter Atton Third place Bronze Medals. All 3 teams were within 2 points of each other. Silver and Bronze Medals were decided with the "twenties" count. Planning an event? Photo submissions may include, but are not limited to, the following activi- ties: doing chores or daily activities together, unstructured play, reading or doing homework, recreational or lei- sure activities or cuddling. The previous contests have featured an excellent variety of entries, judged by professional photographer James Masters, which have been on dis- play around the Grey Bruce region.
