June 5-7, 2014. IIYi — ��s�fl Franklin Marshall competed in the Midget Boys 800m track event at OFSSSA. June 5-7, 2014. Submitted The weather cooperated for the first time this season and the Madill track and field team capitalized on the favourable competition conditions. Of the 10 athletes from Madill who made the long trek to Windsor, 4 qualified in 5 events to compete at the Ontario high school championships in Mississauga. All 10 athletes competed well earning 8 'personal best' perfor- mances. In order to advance to OFSAA, athletes must rank in the top 4 of their events, a diffi- cult achievement at this level of competiton. In the midget (Gr. 9) division, Sydney Wightman was able to execute her full turns in the cir- cle smoothly and hurl the discus the best she has all season with a toss of 25.35m to win 2nd place. In the midget boys division, Ben Newell and Mitch Ward competed in javelin. Newell set a new 'personal best' and school benchmark of 44.35m to earn 4th place. Newell set another school benchmark by hurling the discus 39.78m for 2nd place, qualifying in both events. In the junior division, Karissa Schiestel experienced disap- pointment injuring herself dur- ing warmup and was unable to qualify after an exceptional sea- son. Teammate Lyndon Smith sprinted the 100m stretch over the hurdles winning his heat and the placing 2nd in the finals with a 'personal best' time of 14. 54 s. In the senior division, Naomi Van Stuyven- berg, in her final high school discus competi- tion, broke the 30 m bar- rier several times for the first time throwing the discus 31.12m for 7th place. Jesse Fortier, also in his final year, sprinted over the hurdles in fine form to earn a best ever time of 59.01 s in the 400m hurdles. Graduating sen- ior, Anthony Vader, contin- ued to throw consistently far with a javelin throw of 45.88m for 10th place. At the high jump area, the senior boys enjoyed the top notch facility and warm weather with some exceptional per- formances. Justin McKauge soared over the bar at 1.94 m to better his 'best ever' height by several cm and earn 3rd place in the senior event and a qualifying position for OFSAA.
