The weather cooperated for
the first time this season and
the Madill track and field team
capitalized on the favourable
competition conditions. Of the
10 athletes from Madill who
made the long trek to Windsor, 4
qualified in 5 events to compete
at the Ontario high school
championships in Mississauga.
All 10 athletes competed well
earning 8 'personal best' perfor-
mances. In order to advance to
OFSAA, athletes must rank in
the top 4 of their events, a diffi-
cult achievement at this level of
competiton.
In the midget (Gr. 9) division,
Sydney Wightman was able to
execute her full turns in the cir-
cle smoothly and hurl the discus
the best she has all season with a
toss of 25.35m to win 2nd place.
In the midget boys division,
Ben Newell and Mitch Ward
competed in javelin. Newell set a
new 'personal best' and school
benchmark of 44.35m to earn 4th
place. Newell set another school
benchmark by hurling the discus
39.78m for 2nd place, qualifying
in both events.
In the junior division, Karissa
Schiestel experienced disap-
pointment injuring herself dur-
ing warmup and was unable to
qualify after an exceptional sea-
son. Teammate Lyndon Smith
sprinted the 100m stretch over
the hurdles winning his heat
and the placing 2nd in the finals
with a 'personal best'
time of 14. 54 s.
In the senior division,
Naomi Van Stuyven-
berg, in her final high
school discus competi-
tion, broke the 30 m bar-
rier several times for the
first time throwing the
discus 31.12m for 7th
place. Jesse Fortier, also
in his final year, sprinted
over the hurdles in fine
form to earn a best ever
time of 59.01 s in the 400m
hurdles. Graduating sen-
ior, Anthony Vader, contin-
ued to throw consistently far
with a javelin throw of
45.88m for 10th place. At the
high jump area, the senior
boys enjoyed the top notch
facility and warm weather
with some exceptional per-
formances. Justin McKauge
soared over the bar at 1.94 m
to better his 'best ever' height
by several cm and earn 3rd
place in the senior event and
a qualifying position for
OFSAA.
Sydney Wightman, Ben
Newell, Lyndon Smith and
Justin McKague advance to
the premier event in the prov-
ince for high school track and
field, the OFSAA champion-
ships, in Mississauga. Several
of the younger athletes on the
Madill teams (17 years and
under) are also preparing for
the District C Legion Meet to
be held in Hespler June 29.
