Madill track and field athletes rose to the
challenge at the WOSSAA Championships
held at TD Waterhouse Stadium at the Uni-
versity of Western Ontario. Despite some
cold, wet weather, at the completion of the
two day meet, Madill athletes had earned
28 'personal best' performances, 2 gold
medals, 4 silver medals, and 4 bronze med-
als. Eleven Madill athletes qualified in fif-
teen different events to compete at OFSAA
West Regionals to be held at the University
ofWmdsor.
To qualify for Regionals, athletes must
place in the top five rankings in their indi-
vidual events. 4X100 relay teams competed
well but came up short with two sixth place
finishes. Midget boy, Ben Newell captured
the gold medal in the discus event with a
throw of 37.87m. He also won a silver
medal in high jump soaring over the bar at
1.60m. and claimed fourth in javelin.
Teammate Mitch Ward earned a third
place finish and the bronze medal in the
same event hurling the spear 40.88m. In
the shot put circle, Casey Ward heaved the
shot 11.62m to eam another bronze medal.
On the track, midget boy, Franldin Mar-
shall, shaved several seconds from his time
to earn a qualifying spot in the 800m event.
