Be Aware of
Your Surroundings
Stay Alert!
Valerie Gillies
Editor/Lucknow Sentine
Summer-like weather is
here, bringing with it
increased traffic. Add in the
frustration of close proxim-
ity to a construction zone
and work vehicles making
frequent stops and the
probability for mishaps
rises.
Late Monday morning a
crash was heard on Camp-
bell Street in Lucknow.
Apparently a car was
attempting to maneuver
around a stopped recycle
truck to find a parking spot.
Unfortunately, the truck had
already started moving
when the car started turning
back into the same lane. The
car received extensive dam-
age, but fortunately there
were no apparent injuries as
it was a low -speed impact.
This incident serves to
remind us to stay alert and
be constantly aware of our
surroundings while at the
wheel.
Area police departments
have begun their campaigns
to remind drivers that chil-
dren will soon be finished
school and therefore be
more likely to be on side-
walks, lawns and streets
near traffic. With the con-
struction happening in Luc -
know, there is the added
confusion and frustration of
delays. Detouring past the
school increases traffic on
streets regularly used as
wallcing routes for students.
Bruce County has taken the
necessary recommended
steps to help protect the stu-
dents. The posted signs for
the construction have fore-
warned large trucks to seek
other routes, but the vehi-
cles that are used to conduct
business in the village and

those who provide services
continue to be on the local
roads.
When learning to drive
we are taught to continually
asses our surroundings to
enable us to plan ahead
should anything occur that
requires a reaction to cor-
rect the situation. Changing
lanes for any reason at any
time increases the risk for
accidents to happen. This is
a fact of driving. Knowing
this, experienced drivers
should find it, or make it,
second nature to continu-
ally check blind spots and
be aware of what is in and
around the path of their
vehicle. Performing a
maneuver like this is no
time to be distracted by
things in or around the vehi-
cle. Staying alert and con-
stantly checking greatly
reduces the risk of placing
yourself or others in the
path of harm. Always signal
your intent to change lanes.
These various precautions
are necessary both in higher
speed highway driving and
in built-up areas were lower
speed zones are in effect.
Leaving time and room
for yourself and other driv-
ers to react to changes in a
vehicle path, yours or
another one sharing the
road, is a major way to
reduce risk
While we are on the topic
of leaving extra room, please
be courteous and leave a
safe distance between your
vehicle and the construc-
tion workers, as well as oth-
ers who are on the roads
loading and unloading or
responding to a call. It is not
only being polite, it is the
law to pull over to provide a
safe separation between
your vehicle and them.
Always slow down to go
around other vehicles inside
a community. Exercise cau-
tion to ensure that you and
the other driver have suffi-
cient space to adjust for
changes of speed or direc-
tion. If you do not feel confi-
dent that there is time and
space to do pass safely, wait
until you are sure. Better to
be safe than sorry.
Repeatedly check all
around your vehicle while
pulling in and out of parking
spaces along the street and
in parking lots, as well.
Here is wishing everyone
a safe and happy summer
on and around the area
roads. Remember to leave
enough room and...Stay
alert!
LUCKNOW NEWS
I HAPPY VOTING
" DAY TOMORROW
By Ruth Dobrensky
Please don't forget to vote tomor-
row. If you can't decide who to vote for
or if you are unhappy with all the can-
didates running in our riding, you can
file a protest vote by not voting at all,
don't spoil the ballot by writing on it,
just fold it up and put it in the box, it
has to be counted and all the candi-
dates will know you weren't happy
with any of them, and you do not have
to tell the people at the polling booth
that you did not vote.
In case you hadn't noticed, they've
started the construction on Highway
86/Campbell Street here in Lucknow.
Perhaps that's a good sign that they
may be on schedule with the work that
needs to be done and hopefully the
street won't be dug up for too long.
