and Our Homes
Your Life Will
Never Be the
Same Again
Steve Howe
International Education
Administrator, Avon
Maitland District School
Board
Our International team
is now on the road look-
ing for new host families
to provide a home away
from home for our inter-
national students com-
ing in September. We are
expecting over 120 stu-
dents from around the
world to attend Avon
Maitland schools in
Huron and Perth Coun-
ties for the 2014-2015
school year.
We will have short
term, one semester and
full year students coming
from countries like
Spain, Brazil, Mexico,
Germany, Japan, China
and even Australia. Host-
ing an international stu-
dent is a rewarding expe-
rience for you and your
family and of course a
once in a lifetime experi-
ence for your interna-
tional guest. Most of
these students are
coming to Canada for the
very first time and many
travelling beyond their
home for the first time.
Canada, and in partic-
ular Ontario, has an
impressive reputation
around the world for the
quality of our education.
Thousands of students
from every corner of the
earth look to Canada
each year for a great edu-
cation, a new cultural
experience and to
improve their English
language skills. The num-
bers continue to grow
every year.
We began promoting our
schools not too long ago, in
the fall of 2011. Since that
time we have truly become
a destination of choice. In
our first year we attracted
29 students. We followed
that with 88 students this
year and we are on target to
grow by as much as 40% for
the 2014-2015 schoolyear.
This benefits our
schools and communi-
ties in many ways. It cre-
ates a more diverse pop-
ulation providing our
students with a more
global perspective. It
allows the Board to
maintain many course
offerings that might have
been in jeopardy
because of declining
enrolment. It also saves
valuable jobs in our
schools and in some
cases creates new
employment opportuni-
ties. ft also contributes to
the local economy
because these are fee
paying students, who
also pay for homestay
services and bring along
their own personal
spending money. 100
full-time equivalent stu-
dents would inject more
that over $2 million into
our local economy.
Now with this growth,
there are challenges. We
need more active fami-
lies across Huron and
Perth to provide a home
away from home for our
international guests. The
experience is priceless
and host families are
compensated.
Contact us today to
find out how it all works,
how you and your family
can benefit and how your
participation will help
our schools. We have
representatives in all
regions of our district
who will visit with you
and answer all of your
questions. For more
