An All Candidates Meeting including
Huron -Bruce candidates was jointly
hosted by Saugeen Shores and Kincar-
dine Cambers of Commerce at the
Whiney Crawford Community Centre
on May 28, 2014. Over 100 people
attended to hear Lisa Thompson (Pro-
gressive Conservative), Colleen Schenk
(Liberal), Jan Johnstone (New Demo-
cratic Party) and Andrew Zettle (Family
Coalition Party) in an open question
session.
NDP's Jan Johnstone stated that her
party would not force wind projects on
"unwilling communities" and would
respect municipal democratic deci-
sions and review current FIT contracts
to see what can be done to help com-
munities. Johnstone said Andrea How-
ath, leader of the NDP, plans to reunite
the publicly -owned energy companies
in an effort to reduce costs that were
meant to be saved when they were split
up by the Mike Harris PC party. She
said their priorities focus on creating
jobs, increasing the corporate tax rate
by 1% to a "fair" amount versus the
other parties' plans to cut corporate
taxes. Johnstone stressed the need for
change to NDP stating, "No one listens
to people in rural Ontario and it's time
for change." She supports nuclear
power, expanding risk management in
the agricultural sector, rewarding com-
panies that "Buy Ontario" and create
jobs locally, as well as backing health
care needs, cutting HST from electricity
bills and capping public sector CEO
salaries.
Liberal Colleen Schenk outlined her
party's support for agriculture. She is
opposed to the Ontario Power Genera-
tion Deep Geological Repository (OPG
DGR) for low and intermediate level
waste at the Bruce nuclear site, which is
a federal responsibility, saying "we have
to find other alternatives." Working with
the public sector as well as volunteer-
ing, Schenk is a strong supporter and
proud of the progress made in Ontario's
education system. Liberals support an
increase in wage of Personal Support
Workers (PSW), an Ontario Pension
Plan, local food program support to see
more local products in grocery stores,
access to natural gas, infrastructure
projects, protecting pollinators and
bees and support for the environment
under their commitment to green
energy and to eliminate coal -genera-
tion in Ontario. Schenk places impor-
tance on focusing on water safety and
maintaining the momentum gained in
the health sector with new doctors,
nurses and homecare workers.
Incumbent PC candidate Lisa
Thompson said her party plans to act
on the 2012 Liberal -commissioned
Auditor General's report. Times have
eeting
changed since it was released, as
Thompson indicated, "not for the bet-
ter!' Interest rates could climb if Ontar-
io's credit rating is reduced. Reducing
energy costs is a key focus. The PC's are
interested in eliminating levels of
bureaucracy such as the Local Health
Integration Network and the Ontario
Energy Board. Thompson chided both
the Liberals and NDPs for blocking 10
of her party's private members bills
seeking to put a hold on wind turbine
approvals that have impacted the riding
while pointing at wind for increasing
the cost of electricity.
Family Coalition Party Andrew Zettel
noted that last election only 49% voted
for the "main stream parties" and
offered his candidacy as an alternative
that will focus on family needs, funding
for homeschooling and "allow families
to make the decision and not have all
elements of education dictated by the
province." He stated the mainstream
parties represent "a system of failed
local representation". Zettel's focus
would be to lower energy costs, reduce
Feed -In Tariff contracts if possible and
allow local representatives to act on
decisions that matter to them. He
pointed out that time of use electricity
billing is hurting the agricultural sector
and needs to have an "opt out" option
available.
