Huron Kinloss still in the repository studies

"Propane is up to ninety cents and when we were doing
our first numbers at our open houses, we were using propane
at 80 or 81. We went higher than what the actual price was
when we started into the process. Knowing the costs went up.
Already during the last couple years, we're up to 90 cents."
He said natural gas is important for the area, just as impor-
tant as nuclear.
"If it's the last thing I ever do, we need natural gas in this
area for us," he said. "We've got families who are choosing
whether to pay their taxes or pay their heat to keep their
houses warm, and to me, that's why we have to do this. We
have to find a way:'
Huron -Kinloss is still involved in the process by the Nuclear
Waste Management Organization, involving the decisions of
where a nuclear repository should be placed. Huron -Kinloss,
which would hold Canada's used nuclear fuel.
Twolan said the decision of the repository coming to the
area, will be up to the residents.
"We're a small municipality, getting involved in a big issue
process," he said. "When (council) made this decision, obvi-
ously, a lot of people were horrified, but we if we don't learn
about it and we pretend it's not there and we just pass it on to

that needs a lot more education, needs a lot more informa-
tion so we can all make more informed decisions"
The Community Liaison Committee (CLC) is committed to
working with the community and to hear what the commu-
nity wants. He said the Nuclear Waste Management Organi-
zation wants a willing host.
"Council passed the buck. This is up to the people of
Huron -Kinloss If they want it. Council does not make the
decision," he said.

Huron -Kinloss is into the seventh year of the Septic Inspec-
tion Program, which was a council decision to improve water
quality, Twolan said every septic system will have been
checked by the township.
"Water quality is always a concern," he said. "It's been a
very interesting program but it's also been very educational."
