County, chamber, communicating
on Campbell Street redevelopment
The County of Bruce has to fine-tune
its plan to resurface Bruce Road 86
(Campbell Street) before work gets
started this summer.
Bruce County engineer Brian Knox
attended an extended Huron -Kinloss
council meeting on Monday, Jan. 13 to
discuss the project, which promises to
disrupt traffic in town for six to ten
weeks later this year.

The project is broken down into two
parts: an urban reconstruction between
Havelock and Washington streets, and
surface rehabilitation from Havelock to
the western border of the village.
During the urban reconstruction, the
Township of Huron -Kinloss will replace
an old water main between Havelock
and Bob streets while the county
updates the curbs and gutters to an
urban standard.
The surface restoration will include a
pedestrian crossing to help slow high-
way traffic passing through town. Knox
outlined possible locations, including:
near Stauffer Street, west of Inglis Street,
east of Inglis Street, or replacing the
school crosswalk at Havelock Street.
Knox said the the discussion with
council and the chamber suggests there
is interest in the location on the east
side of Inglis.
It was pointed out that there are no
guarantees that businesses and resi-
dents will have daily access to Camp-
bell at the east end and that some
inconveniences to resident, truck and
tourist traffic for the duration of the
construction period is unavoidable.
Morten Jakobsen, president of the
Lucknow Chamber of Commerce,
spoke to concerns of local businesses
that a detour would send prime sum-
mer traffic out of town.
"We want to make sure both the
county and the township are ready for a
correct and good detour and that it
detours in town," Jakobsen said in a
phone interview. "They had talked first
about doing it right in the middle of
summer - July and August - and for us
that is a no-go because that is our life-
line for the whole year with all the traf-
fic going to the lake."
The detour should go down
Willoughby Street, which will first need
to be patched up, and when the detour
clears the township should repave it,
Jakobsen said.
"They should get the main street
resurfaced and the traffic slowing work
done this year, get it all prepared and in
order for the detour, and then do the
Police arrest fleeing driver after crash in North Huron
A male driver was arrested early this
morning after he failed to stop for
police.
Just before 7 a.m. Huron County
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers
responded to a call of a suspicious vehi-
cle driving around a farm supply busi-
ness located in Londesborough. Offic-
ers located the suspect vehicle just
north of Londesborough and attempted
a traffic stop. The driver failed to stop
for police and proceeded to travel
northbound through Blyth on London
Road.
Between Moncrieff Road and St.
Michael's Road the fleeing sus-
pect attempted to pass a Honda CRV
that had pulled over for the police vehi-
cles. The suspect vehicle collided with
the rear of the Honda sending the sus-
pect vehicle off the roadway into a
snowbank in the east ditch.
The suspect immediately exited his
vehicle and tried to escape on foot.
After a short foot chase officers were
able to arrest the fleeing suspect.
The female driver of the Honda was
transported to hospital with minor inju-
ries. She has since been released from
hospital.
The fleeing male driver was trans-
ported to hospital with minor injuries.
He is currently in police custody with
charges to follow. Further information
will be provided as it becomes
available.
east side work first thing in 2015;" he said.
"The work has to be done because the road is falling apart
but it is a matter of doing it with the least inconvenience to
business owners"
Knox will take the feedback into consideration and con-
tinue to coordinate with the township before final plans are
announced.
"I don't think anything is firm yet but we have some guid-
ance from the chamber and council as to where we are
going," Knox said.
