Lucknow & District Horticultural
Society looks back on 2013
By Margaret Murray
Lucknow Horticultural Society Director
The Lucknow & District Horticultural
Society's 2013 year in review started in
January with the Executive Board meet-
ing to plan the year ahead.
Committees were formed and events
planned. Several General Meetings
were set in place with some very inter-
esting speakers on various topics. We
learned all about hummingbirds, con-
tainer gardening, sun and shade gar-
dening among other things.
A seed exchange was held in spring.
The Soup and Sandwich event was a
big success due to the support of every-
one. The fun night gave us information
on how to prepare for a flower show,
flower arranging and how to
recognize poisonous plants.
There was a pot luck lunch
held in the Waterworks Park
followed by a garden tour.
Also held in Waterworks
Park was a plant exchange
and auction. In July the
Flower Show was held in the
Lucknow Untied Church
Fellowship Room, and was a
great success as there were
more exhibitors and speci-
mens exhibited than ever
before.
The Society entered a float
in the Fall Fair and due to
the hard work of the volun-
teers and the donated items
our float won first prize. Our
membership drive was a big
success and because of the
number of members we had,
the society received a Tree
Grant from AMAFRA. The
tree was planted in the
Waterworks Park in part to
replace the trees that had to
be removed that had been
invaded by the Emerald Ash
Borer.
Our President Suzanne
Andrew was on hand when
it was planted. A bursary was
presented to Rachel Nivins a
youth member of the society
for her continuing education
in the field of Horticulture.

The year-end banquet was held in
November again in the Lucknow
United Church Fellowship Room. The
Lucknow United Church Ladies pro-
vided a delicious meal of roast beef and
a variety of deserts. The speaker was
Martin Quinn from Goderich. Martin
spoke about the rebuilding of the trees
and gardens that he coordinated in the
aftermath of the devastating tornado
that Goderich experienced. Two
awards were presented; the winner of
the most points gained at the flower
show, and the president' s award.
The New Executive was sworn in; our
new president is Wendy Snow; then the
evening came to a close. Thank you to
all who contributed to a very successful
year.
