Blizzard clean up goes
smoothly for Huron County staff

depot centres, which are stocked with
food for such occasions, because they
couldn't get home due to the conditions.
Not that they want to go home, Orchard
noted. "It's like telling a hockey player to
go home mid -game. They take a break
and they are back at it!'
Orchard praised the work of staff at
county nursing homes, where double and
triple shifts were the norm because staff
couldn't get to work
A retired RN even offered to help out,
she said.
Paramedics faced weather-related chal-
lenges, as well, including helping to
deliver a baby in an ambulance in the
Wingham area. "We got there a few min-
utes before the midwife," said deputy chief
Jeff Horseman. First responders also
helped transport a patient in critical care
from Goderich to London and trans-
ported a woman in labour from Wingham
to Listowel.
Huron OPP Const. Jamie Stanley said
there were collisions on county roads and
vehicles that went off road had to be aban-
doned because they were stuck in drifts.
After the weather subsided, the clean
up of heavy drifts and ensuring stuck vehi-
cles were removed kept the roads closed.
Schools were shutdown board -wide
and local businesses were slower.
The cleanup went well into last week.
"It was nice to see people pulling
together and doing it with spirit," said
Orchard. "It brings people together.

Lucknow News toughs out the cold
By Ruth Dobrensky
Did all that cold weather and blow-
ing snow get to you? I don't know how
you feel, but when I get housebound
because of bad weather, I get a bit on
the antsy side. No matter what the
weather, I do like to get out for some
fresh air, it clears out the cobwebs. I
did experience some fun with the
snow drifts while out to visit the Yod-
er's on Creek Line Road, and, unfortu-
nately, got stuck in a drift in their lane -
way. Fortunately, their neighbour,
pulled me out with his tractor. Thanks
also to neighbours who helped clean
my car off when I was under the
weather on Jan. 6 and unable to cele-
brate Ukrainian Christmas.
So many things have been canceled
because of closed roads and bad road
conditions that everyone has been,
like me, "stuck" inside. The only funny
thing is that I, being in my second or is
it my third childhood, built a snow
lady before the New Year and although
she did start to melt a little, she now
looks like a lone mountain in front of
my patio, her features and clothes bur-
ied deep in the snow.
If all went well, and the weather is
good on Saturday, Jan. 11, St. Peter's
Anglican Church hosted a potluck
lunch for all four churches in our
Parish of New Beginnings. If previous
occasions are any indication, the food
and entertainment were great.
I have two apologies to make, one to
Claudia Baskerville whose name I
used in last weeks column errone-
ously, sorry Claudia; and, sorry to Lil-
lian Abbott who was the lovely person
I was speaking to about our mutual
Ukrainian heritage. Perhaps the two of
you should get together and throw
some soggy cabbage rolls at me, I
deserve it.
Sympathy of the community to the
families of: Margaret Weber, 81, Luc -
know; Lloyd Sillick, 94, Teeswater;
and, Jessica Johnston, 16, Wingham.
