Aocna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association www.lucknowsentinel.com Mother nature can mess up our plans Mother Nature really has a way of messing up people's plans doesn't she? Most of the time it might not matter but when it hits our holi- days, it causes all manner of grief. After all, not only have we spent hours discussing who is going where and when but also how to get all that shopping done in the allotted time. And for some, not mentioning any names, that could mean the day before the holiday. Can you relate? So how did you make out? Were you caught up in the recent ice storm and had your plans go awry? Did your timelines get extended because you had to dig your way out of the snow? And if you are like me, you no sooner got in the house and it was snowing again! What's with this winter any- way? I got caught up in three snow storms and that was in October no less. On the 23rd, I was driving home from Toronto and it snowed all the way. Then on the 24th I was driving home from London and guess what? Yep; it snowed all the way. Then before the crack of dawn on the 26th, I barely got 20 minutes out of town and I was plunged into a January blizzard as I headed to Column Merri Macartney Mississauga. I was beginning to think that Mother Nature had declared war on me. Not that I'm paranoid or anything. But counting on the weather to cooperate with holiday plans was something that I wasn't about to do. Besides, the news reports hundreds of people that get way -laid every year hurrying here and there to carry out their carefully devised plans. It is a well known fact that people spend hours and hours planning their holiday visits and vacations yet very few when it comes to their future. Ask any- one who has gone south what it took them to find just the right accommodations, just the right flight and all at just the right price. Yes, the internet makes the searching easier but still it takes time, effort and a desire to live the dream. Now ask these same folks what plans they have for the coming new year and it becomes a joking matter about New Year's resolutions that only last a few weeks. I've done my share of these: lose weight, save money, declutter my house, get rid of stuff I wasn't using. All great ideas that I planned to do but somehow they never quite happened. Not Mother Nature's fault. This time last year friends were visiting and we were talk- ing about what things we'd do in 2013 to enrich our lives and lead us further down the road of our life journey. As I think about where we were then and where we are now, much has changed. Some of it not of our doing and some because of what we did. We had a lot of fun making plans and dreaming dreams. One of the things I was planning to do was to make a viral video. That sounds easy but what is it that makes a video go viral? Jus- tin Bieber sang and we know what happened to him. Well, as anyone can tell you, I can't sing. Cute puppies and babies go viral. ..no help there. And so do videos of people in their most embarrassing moment or doing some really crazy stunt. I think not! So what does that leave? Don't know... so my video didn't happen. At least not yet. But I do have a scathingly brilliant idea - a plan - so now it will be for the coming year. Another plan I had was to write The Channel Changer Series of six mini -books. I com- pleted two and grew the number to more than the original six. For the coming year, these mini - books will become chapters of a Kindle book. These are not resolutions that will simply fade in a month or two but are plans that will add value to my life in many ways. Accomplishments add happi- ness, satisfaction, contentment and serves as an example to oth- ers. What better legacy could we leave? Note to Self: Remember the ancient proverb; "He who fails to plan, plans to fail." And of course, that goes or women too! The band will play at the Bruce Steakhouse this Sunday, Jan. 12 from 2-5 p.m., as part of a fundraiser to help send the band to the event in Memphis, Ten- nessee, where blues artists will converge from all over the world. "Last year's semi-final finish really was quite an accomplish- ment and we want to send them off right," said Bruce County Blues founder Rick Clarke. The "Queen Street to Beale Street" event is the tag line used to describe the band's trip from Kincardine's main street, to the heart of the blues community in Memphis. Clarke said the band will be recording a new album at Sun Studios, the same recording stu- dio that has seen Elvis and Johnny Cash pass through its doors. The MacKenzie Blues Band is also looking forward to hearing the results of its nomination for the Maple Blues Award, which is Canada's most significant blues industry award. The band's first album 'Back Road Revelation' was named #1 Blues Album in Canada on the Blind Lemon Blues Charts and they appeared at a number of events, including the Goderich West Coast Blues Festival.
