Catering to your sweet tooth : 'kr'',

At Armstrong's Home Bakery, Lucknow, a bell above the door
jingles whenever a visitor enters the store, people sit in the dining
room enjoying a coffee and a baked good before carrying on with
their day, three girls wrap brownies into individual wrappings
and freshly made bread is on display for purchase.
"We love it being in Luclaiow, says Susan Ropp, who owns the
bakery along with her husband Larry Ropp. "It's a nice small
town. We enjoy it here. It's our home:'
The bakery is nestled in the downtown of Lucknow, adding a
touch of the surreal to the community. Bakeries aren't as com-
mon as they used to be. The cost of ingredients has made it hard
for bakeries to keep competitive pricing and keep the doors
open. But Armstrong's is still going strong.
"When we bought it, it was already 35 years," she says, thinking
back to the gut -instinct to purchase the business, recipes and all.
The bakery features breads, danishes, coffee, sandwiches, any-
thing your grain side wants and your sweet tooth craves.
In the summer time, the staff prepare 22 dozen butter tarts on
"market days" where the staff load up their goodies and head to
the Goderich market. Another 12 dozen fruit tarts are prepared
as well, along with 50 pies.
"Everyone loves it when it's really busy. January is our
slow time. Lucknow is a tourist town, so in the summer
time people going to the cottages and get what they want
on the way," Ropp said.
The bakery employs 15 staff members, which take differ-
ent shifts ensuring that every single thing is made from
scratch and made fresh for their patrons.
"If it wasn't for our customers, this wouldn't happen,"
Ropp said.
