February is Head Month

Heart disease is the number one killer in Can-
ada and it's the reason the Heart and Stroke Foun-
dation of Ontario was created in 1952. Heart and
Stroke Foundation Grey Bruce area manager Carol
Potter said it's the goal of each location to promote
ways to prevent heart disease, educate people on
heart disease and improve the health of people to
reduce risk factors.
February is Heart Month where all of these goals
are given as much awareness as possible through
all of the canvassing and fundraising events the
foundation does.
"With all of the fundraising being done at the
national level it gives the Heart and Stroke Foun-
dation the ability to invest more than $38 million
in research across Canada this year. Without that
it's hard to focus on being able to prevent heart
disease, save lives and promote recovery," said
Potter. "All of these funds go in the direction of
doing those three things and the people of Grey -
Bruce have always had a great heart and have been
very very generous."
Potter said the Heart and Stroke Foundation has
a mandate to reduce lives lost from heart disease
by a large percentage by 2020. She said it's an
aggressive goal, but said it's one worthwhile to
achieve.
"Because of the money raised and the research
done it has allowed the foundation to set goals of
reducing deaths from heart disease and stroke as
well as to significantly improve the health of Cana-
dians by reducing their risk factors of heart disease
by 10 per cent by the year 20207 said Potter. "When
the foundation was started in 1952 three out of
four Canadians would die from heart or stroke dis-
ease and now it's only one in four, so we are creat-
ing survivors every day because of the research
that has been generously supported."
One of the ways the foundation does for Heart
Month is to help promote living a healthy lifestyle.
She said it's a great way for people to reduce heart

and stroke risk factors while allowing them to be
able to live a more active and productive life. Pot-
ter added that she and her staff visit many schools
in the area to promote heart safety.
"Through fundraising and events the foundation
is able to help people live healthier more produc-
tive lives. Nine out of 10 Canadians still have at
least one risk factor of heart and stroke disease
and one our of seven people still die every hour
from heart and stroke disease so we are working
hard to change those numbers to help people live
longer healthier lives," said Potter. "We also have a
fabulous hearth healthy school program for kids
and that focuses on physical activity and nutrition
and those are the type of things that help turn
healthy behaviour by starting people at an early
age."
Potter said the many events the foundation puts
on in Grey -Bruce really help raise money for
research as well as the many canvassers that go
door -to door to help raise money for the Heart and
Stroke Foundation. Potter said the foundation
recently held an Owen Sound Attack night where
Attack players were auctioned off then the winners
were able to have breakfast with them; a dress
down day from local Grey -Bruce businesses with
proceeds going to the foundation; A Jump Rope
for Heart at local Grey -Bruce schools as well as Big
Bike days throughout Grey -Bruce.
"This year we have 1,400 door-to-door canvass-
ers in Grey -Bruce and a third of those volunteers
will be handling the all of the local fundraising
events we do," said Potter. "The Big Bike is a 29
seater bike where people and businesses fundraise
and then on the day of they ride the big bike
around to promote awareness for heart and stroke
disease research. It takes place the second week of
May and we are just starting to build our teams
now and it's always a lot of fun."
With Heart Month and all of the events Potter
said she is amazed at how generous the Grey -
Bruce area is and how much work and dedication
each and every volunteer gives to the foundation.
"I just want to give a huge shout out and thanks

to all of the volunteers across Grey -

ous donors across the counties here,"
said Potter. "The donors and volunteers
make a huge impact and what a signifi-
cant difference they make to the lives of
thousands of people. We just want to
keep working towards heart healthy
lives."
