The Lucknow Sentinel, 2014-12-31, Page 1616 Lucknow Sentinel • Wednesday, December 31, 2014 $8,500 worth of co Detectors Donated to Huron -Bruce PC MPPS Team Up with Insurance Bureau of Canada Submitted Lisa Thompson, Huron - Bruce MPP, and Ernie Har- deman, Oxford MPP, joined Doug DeRabbie from the Insurance Bureau of Can- ada to put additional car- bon monoxide detectors in the homes of Huron -Bruce residents and to raise awareness that they are needed in all homes. "Carbon Monoxide poi- soning is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, but many of these tragedies can be prevented by installing a CO detector," said Hardeman. "It is particularly important in the winter months to ensure your fam- ily is protected by making sure vents aren't blocked and that you have a func- tioning carbon monoxide detector." Thompson explained that you can reduce the risk of car- bon monoxide poisoning by checking to make sure vents, exhausts and chimneys are clear; having fuel -burning appliances serviced regularly; and getting a carbon monox- ide detector and checking it whenever the time changes to ensure it is working. Last year the Ontario Legislature passed the Hawkins Gignac Act, a private members bill intro- duced by PC MPP Ernie Hardeman, requiring car- bon monoxide detectors in Ontario homes and estab- lishing Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week beginning November 1st each year. The Bill was named after a Woodstock family of four that tragically lost their lives after a blocked fireplace exhaust filled the house with carbon monoxide. "Carbon monoxide is dangerous because you can't see it, taste it or smell it," said Thompson. "The only way to ensure you and your family are protected is to reduce the risk of leaks and to get a detector."
