The Association is the premier association representing nearly 900 independent com- munity-based telecommuni- cations companies. These independent companies are the leading innovators in rural areas in North America. The Association cited the advanced communication services and collaboration with local leaders in the com- munities it serves as the keys to HuronTel's success. Huron - Tel is the only Canadian com- pany to receive this award, with the remaining recipients being in the United States. HuronTel received the nomination in September and was honoured with the award at a gathering hosted by NTCA which included more than 1,000 leaders of rural tel- ecommunications providers. In a recent press release it was stated that "Hurontel was honoured with the award for deploying advanced technol- ogies and leveraging those technologies to enable inno- vation in the areas of eco- nomic development and commerce, education, enhanced health care and government services." The panel of experts who judged the companies were from the fields of telecommunications, software and technology ser- vices, education, health care and economic development. The Rural Broadband Asso- ciation provided a number of signs to recognize the com- munities that are HuronTel partner communities as "Smart Rural Communities': HuronTel presented the signs to local municipalities in December 2014, including Huron -Kinloss, Goderich, Ashfield-Colborne- Wawanosh and North Huron. Glenn Grubb, General Manager of Hurontel, expressed his appreciation to the municipalities for their cooperation. Without this, HuronTel would not have been recognized. When speaking to Huron -Kinloss Mayor Mitch Twolan, Grubb commented on the fact that when the work was being completed in the communi- ties it was with no hassles from the municipal workers. When things needed to be in place, they were. This is not always the case when work is done on particular projects. He also commends the com- munities for embracing broadband and the hospitals, schools and businesses who have invested in the equip- ment that connects to broadband. Submitted The staff at the Ripley office of HuronTel posed with the "Smart Rural Community" award recently given by The Rural Broadband Association to Hurontel, the only Canadian telecommunications company to be honoured. From left: Kevin Galloway, Markus Schwartz, Cheryl Adair, Preston Drennan, Dennis Dewar, Kevin Paul, Dave Ditner, Zack Nelson, Ben Ferguson, Matt Black. Grubb stated that HuronTel is still actively making applica- tions to ask for more funding, especially from the federal government. He encourages the counties to continue to make applications as well, but advises that these be carefully worded to be more successful. Grubb advised that the federal government needs to be made aware of the fact that the availability of broadband is still not being addressed outside of rural villages. These areas have to be identified by the counties as desperate. Another caution for those making applications is to watch for duplication of ser- vices. Too often the grants that are being made available are for services already in place, rather than expanding the infrastructure and services to those who do not already have access.
