Merry Christmas
Welcome to the 2014 Christmas Edi-
tion of the Lucknow Sentinel. It
appeared that we were going to have a green
Christmas, but seeing as this is the Bruce
and Huron County border, that is so very
unlikely to happen in any year.
As at any Christmas time there has been a
bustle of activity in the area. It seems an
impossibility to keep up with all the festivities,
events and happenings in this rural area. Who
says rural Ontario is a sleepy little place to
live? Certainly not anyone who does live here.
Again we have the traditional Christmas
stories. There is more coverage, as promised,
of the Lucknow Community Carolfest. There
are more Santa Letters than there are pages
to hold them. Local author Mike O'Neil has
again penned a special Christmas story for
the Sentinel readers.
Congratulations to HuronTel for being hon-
oured for their innovation and commitment to
technology and to working cooperatively with
the communities it serves. We have many rea-
sons to be proud of our neck of the woods.
Congratulations are also in order for the
Girls Night Out Fundraising committee on
such a huge success on their first event. With
the health care crisis continuing, it is contri-
butions and efforts such as this that are mak-
ing the difference in rural health care.
With all the coverage we have had lately
about people doing without healthy food, it
is encouraging to see Huron County taldng
an active lead in addressing this issue. Please
take the time to look over the draft of the
Food Charter that was released and give your
input to make this a valid and comprehen-
sive initiative.
Many will be travelling this holiday season.
Please be sure to drive carefully and cau-
tiously. This includes making adjustments
for weather, for others who are travelling
with and around us, keeping your speed
down, keeping distractions to a minimum
and making the decision to not impair
judgement and reflexes when in care and
control of a vehicle.
Travellers should also heed the cautions
that have been given in previous editions of
the Sentinel. Keep vehicles locked to prevent
theft. If you are to be away for an extended
time be sure to take precautions to secure
your home and belongings and deter
unwanted intruders. Be courteous to others
who are also in a hurry and distracted and
keep your children and pets safe in their
excitement and confusion at this time of year.
The staff of the Lucknow Sentinel wish all a
very Merry Christmas.

Tonight most churches in town are cel-
ebrating Christmas Eve services. St.
Peter's Anglican Church will be holding
their last Christmas Eve candlelight ser-
vice at 10:30 this evening with a special
message and music. All are invited to
attend.
A little birdie told me that a certain
Joan Robinson will be turning 91 tomor-
row, happy birthday you Christmas baby
you.
Last week, the Lucknow Sepoy Ranees
(red hatters) went carolling to the seniors
residences around Lucknow. We started
out at Pinecrest Manor, travelled to Nine
Mile Villa, Sepoy Manor, and ended up at
Ostbek apartments. Not only did we
enjoy ourselves, I think our listeners
enjoyed our singing, in fact, at our last
engagement at Ostbek, a gentleman
named Ed requested a special song to
the tune of Glow little glow worm. The
words were a bit dubious, but we did our
best to fill his request. All in all, we had a
great time.
There have been a number of stories in
the news over the past few weeks about
the growing numbers of people who
need to use foodbanks, not just in our
backyard, but in places such as Nunuvut
in our far north. If there is any way you
can help the foodbanks out, please do so,
not just at Christmas but anytime you
have an extra few dollars and can con-
tribute a few items of food. People in dire
circumstances need to eat all year
around, not just at Christmas, so help out
if you can.
At the time of writing, this old person
celebrated another birthday, it's hard to
believe that I'm part of the senior citizens
section of society and in less than two
years will hit that big 70. Although I don't
celebrate my birthday with any great par-
ties, I did receive some lovely cards and
gifts, and my cousin Jean didn't send me
the same birthday card, again. I teased
her quite a bit about perhaps becoming a
bit senile in that regard, but I really
thought it was funny to see cards to a
favourite cousin that were the same two
years in a row.
Sympathy of the community to the
family of: Ken Schumacker, 65,
Teeswater.
Don't forget to leave out a few treats for
Santa and his reindeer tonight. My fat cat
Smokey and I hope that everyone will
have a wonderful and joyous Christmas
with friends and family. Merry Christmas
to all and to all a goodnight.

History Cuttings
It is that time of year when many fami-
lies draw close together to celebrate the
holiday season. The volunteers with the
East Ashfield History Book are hoping that
someone in those families will take the
time to write down the family connections
to the township and submit them to the
committee.
We have completed the registry work on
all of the farms and now face the task of
compiling the history of the families.
Many thanks if you have already submit-
ted your family information, but we are on
the hunt for more. Historians can be a bit
greedy. If you are in doubt about being
part of this project, please talk to someone
from West Ashfield, Kinloss or West
Wawanosh about their participation in the
books from those townships. Or better yet,
the books may be seen at your local
library. We are working towards as com-
plete as possible up-to-date history of East
Ashfield.
