Dave had been to his broth-
er's house a thousand times
before, and he knew that the
cracked sidewalk that they
walked up was right But when
the first man, the one that had
appeared at his back door,
pushed the door open, he
knew that what lay beyond was
not his brother's house. That
was not his brother's front hall.
"What is this?" Dave
demanded, then yelped as
they pushed him inside.
"Hey!" He shouted, twist-
ing to beat his fists on the
door when they slammed it
shut behind him. This wasn't
his brother's house. It had
only looked like it from out-
side. Here, where he was
suddenly trapped inside,
everything was perfect white
and painfully clean, like he'd
found himself inside an ice
cube. "Let me out!"
He spun to face the famil-
iar voice, and blinked at his
brother Jake. His brother was
dressed in a hazmat suit, like
his, but his mask was hanging
in front of him, instead of
over his head. Jake was a
sight for sore eyes, but his
brother looked disappointed,
for some reason, to see him.
"Jake!" He grinned,
relieved. "What's going on?!"
His brother waved at the
door that cut them off from
freedom. "Those men...
they're terrorists, or some-
thing. They released a biologi-
cal weapon... a disease bomb.
Burned up all the water, made
the sky look... green. Killed
everyone. Except... us:'
His eyes widened, horri-
fied. "We're the only two
people left alive?!"
"No;' Jake shook his head,
shrugging. "I mean, those guys
are alive, right? There's proba-
bly other people like them. But
it's our family. We're all
immune. We're all here.
Grandma... great aunt
Eunice... cousin Dawn. We're
all here... in this weird little sci-
ence lab house they built for usf'
"...so eternal Christmas
dinner?" Dave asked, slowly.
"Yeah. Makes you wish
you weren't immune, huh?"
Jake grinned.
Flu Arrives in Grey Bruce
Grey Bruce
Health Unit
On Friday, November 28,
2014, the Grey Bruce Health
Unit received laboratory test
results confirming influenza
A in a resident of Bruce
County. This is the first con-
firmed case of influenza (flu)
in Grey Bruce this season.
Health care providers in
Grey Bruce have been noti-
fied and will perform testing,
as required.
There has been an increase
in flu activity throughout the
province with 37 laboratory
confirmed cases for the week
of November 16-22, 2014.
There have been 139 lab con-
firmed cases in the province
since August 24,2014.
Symptoms of flu may
include headache, chills and
cough, followed rapidly by
fever, loss of appetite, mus-
cle aches, fatigue, runny
nose, sneezing, watery eyes
and throat irritation.
Each year, 10-20 per cent
of Canadians get sick with
the flu. It is estimated that
12,200 people are hospital-
ized, and about 3,500 die.
Immunization is the best
way to protect yourself and
others more vulnerable
against influenza. This year,
immunizations are available
through area health care
providers and most phar-
macies. Other ways to pro-
tect against influenza and
other viruses include: wash
your hands often or use an
alcohol -based hand rubs;
contain your cough by cov-
ering your mouth with your
sleeve, not your hand; if
feeling unwell, stay home
and rest; if sick, don't visit a
loved one in a hospital or
long-term care facility. With
weakened immune systems,
the elderly and those in hos-
pital are more at risk of
developing serious compli-
cations from influenza that
can be life threatening.
