Canacra Aocna Member of the Canadian Community Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association Val's Views Valerie Gillies Schedules and Preparing and Such Everybody is rushing around participating in and preparing for all sorts of Christmas and winter- time events and projects. It seems that when I wished everyone a Merry Christmas at the end of my last editorial, it threw some people off, thinking it was the Christmas issue. It has always seemed to me that once the Santa Claus parades start, it is time to start wishing people a Merry Christmas so that is what I did. To clarify that point, there will be Lucknow Senti- nels distributed on each and every Wednesday in December. However, it should be pointed out that due to printing schedules to accommodate holiday dates, the deadline dates for submissions have been moved ahead. For those of you who make regular contributions or those who have news or photos, be aware that materials for the December 24 issue will need to be submitted on or before Wednesday, December 17 and for the December 31st issue, on or before December 22. Anything received after these dates will be held for future issues. There is certainly no end to the talent and creativity in and around Lucknow. The array of musicians and choristers at the Community Carolfest made for a most enjoyable evening. The number of handmade items for the Sentinel Mitten Tree shows the TLC that area craft- ers show for others in the community. Imagination came through in the Community Novel compiled at the Lucknow Library throughout the month of Novem- ber. I have begun to receive the Santa letters from our three contributing schools that will start to be pub- lished in the next issue. More creativity and beauty can be seen in all the decorating of businesses and resi- dences in the area. I cannot speak for everyone, but I, for one, have been enjoying the much nicer driving weather dur- ing our Indian Summer this past couple of weeks. That early taste of winter certainly got everyone thinking Christmas, but after the last hard winter, it was disheartening to have it hit so soon and so hard again this year. The number of farm machines on the roads and in the fields attests to the fact that more time was needed to get the crops off of the fields. Whether you are dreaming of a White Christmas or rushing to take advantage of the fall -like weather, here is wishing you a safe journey where ever you are going to prepare and celebrate in the coming weeks. Remember to stay alert when travelling and while you are shopping, think of those who are in need and pick up that little something extra to pass on. Now, to not confuse anybody... Happy December everyone!!! Lucknow news Ruth Dobrensky What a great Carolfest we had last Wednesday night, all the churches were represented including St. Peter's Anglican which has not had a choir in the program for a number of years. Under the guidance of Marilyn Scott, and the assistance of some "friends of St. Peter's',' a Ukulele band and choir took part in Carolfest. All the choirs were wonderful and everyone who attended enjoyed a wonderful evening ofjoyful Christmas music. Once again the HAWK Theatre's Christmas production "Stripes" was a wonderful show. This year's play was directed by our own Mac- kenzie Carruthers. This past Saturday also saw Dun- gannon's annual "Chrsitmas in the Country" sale. There was some- thing for everyone and many peo- ple were seen looking for that spe- cial gift for that special someone. Now that Carolfest and the local Christmas play have put us all in the Christmas mood (if we weren't before), don't forget to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. There is a mitten tree at the Sentinel, there are the local food banks and if you think they aren't needed, think again. Just last week I heard on the news that the number of families making use of foodbanks for the first time rose by several thousand over the previous year. I know how tough things can be and if you have a family at Christmas and not enough money to buy food let alone gifts for the kids, it can be a tough go. So give what you can, if you can. I notices in last week's paper that Gary Austin is retiring, speaking for myself, I know that Gary will be greatly missed. He seemed to know everyone and was always there with a smile and a helping hand when needed. I was certainly happy to see him when a tree fell on St. Peter's Anglican Church a fewyears ago. As one of the Warden's at St. Peter's I didn't know where to start, but Gary took over and before you could say Gary Austin, that tree was being cut up and removed from the church roof. Have a long and happy retirement Gary, you deserve it Sympathy of the community to the families of: Ross Lockwood, 90, Ripley; John Green, 84, Lucknow; Frank Chin, 88, Toronto (formerly Lucknow); Euphemia Cameron, 99, Lucknow; Rita Walters, 58, Kin- cardine; and Dr. Elizbeth Munn, 56, Windsor. Agricultural Society Announces 2015 Fall Fair Theme Submitted "Country Bumpkins, Harvest Pumpkins" is the theme for the 2015 Lucknow Fall Fair. The Board of Directors made the announce- ment at their Nov. 25 meeting. Over $11,000 was paid out in prize money to participants in the 2014 Lucknow Fall Fair centered on "The Family Farm': The annual meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 20 at the Luc - know Presbyterian Church. Tickets are $15 and available from any board member or call 519-528-2284. As we live in Bruce County, the snow date will be January 27. A nominating committee is now in place and searching for individ- uals who would be interested in sitting on the board or being a committee member. The board is currently in the process of review- ing a draft organizational chart with the goal of streamlining the roles and responsibilities of each director; however, that goal will only be reached if the number of directors can be increased. If you are interested in either director or committee status, please call Pat Livingston at 519-528-2284 for fur- ther information.
