Local Author Publishes Young Adult Novel
Cathy Hird
releases
"Moon of the
Goddess"
Submitted
Cathy Hird lives in Grey
County but her young adult
novel "Moon of the
Goddess" takes the reader
back 3000 years to the land
of Greece in the Age of
Heroes. Hird, the former
minister at the United
Church in Ripley will be at
Finchers Bookstore ill Kin-
cardine on December 6th
from 2 - 3:30.
Although this novel will
delight boys and girls in their
early teen years, adults will
also enjoy the story as Hird
delves into the history and
mythology of ancient
Greece. Details of the land-
scape come from her visits to
the ocean shores and moun-
tains of that land. Her knowl-
edge of Greek mythology
adds texture to the story.
In "Moon of the Goddess';
Hird tells the story of the
kidnapped daughter of a
king and the race to rescue
her. Hird draws on ancient
mythology to touch on
questions that are current.
"It is something like what I
do on Sundays," she says. "I
retell an old story in a way
that gives perspective on
today." "Moon of the
Goddess" is a coming of age
story that addresses the
struggle to conquer fear and
gain inner strength. Build-
ing partnership with unex-
pected companions, con-
quering self-centred
ambition, and finding the
strength to endure are just a
few of the threads that run
through this work.
"Moon of the Goddess" is
Hird's first novel. She
writes a weekly spirituality
column for an online news
magazine, and works as a
United Church minister.
She also runs a sheep farm
with her family near Wal-
ter's Falls. For more infor-
mation visit her website at

Pay your Overdue Fines and Help Local Food Banks
Bruce County
Public Library
Submitted
For many living in Bruce
County, access to affordable
food can be a struggle. Food
banks are year-round pro-
grams that often rely on con-
tributions from the commu-
nity to keep running.
Bruce County Public
Library's Food for Fines will be
running December 1-14, 2014
at all 17 of their branches. For
every item of food donated
during Food for Fines we will
wipe out $2 in overdue fines
from your account. Multiple
donations are more than wel-
come, and up to $10 of over-
due fines can be reduced per
person.
"Food for fines is about
breaking down barriers. It's an
opportunity for people who
may be reluctant to visit the
library because of fines, to
clear or reduce their fines"
says Melissa Legacy, Assistant
Library Director. 'At the same
time they are helping those in
need in their community."
Please note that this promo-
tion is good for overdue fines
only. No change will be given
for food donations in excess of
fines owed, although excess
donations are more than wel-
come. Visit any Bruce County
Public Library branch to
