Margaret Mowbray celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, August 2, 2014.
Marilynne Gilchrist
Margaret Mowbray enjoyed
celebrating her 100th birthday
with family and friends at a tea
held in her honour on Satur-
day, August 2 at the Lucknow
Community Centre. Margaret
was born at the start of World
War I, on August 1, 1914. She
has seen many changes in her
lifetime. She remembers the
excitement when hydro finally
came down the sixth conces-
sion of Kinloss where she lived
with her husband, David Car-
ruthers, and her three daugh-
ters Marilyn (Maclntyre),
Amelia (Murray) and Janet
(Bannerman). She appreciates
all the medical advances
which have occurred in the
last 100 years. Vaccines for
tuberculosis and tetanus were
developed in the 1920s and
the benefits of penicillin were
also discovered in that decade.
Polio was such a terrible dis-
ease which affected many in
this area prior to 1955 when a
vaccine was finally developed.
She also notes that women's
rights have changed during
the past century. It wasn't until
a few years after her birth that
women were given the right to
vote in Ontario, and later in
federal, elections. She was
seven years old when Agnes
MacPhail was elected as the
first female Member of Parlia-
ment. Margaret has experi-
enced so many other changes
but the most notable have
been the advances in technol-
ogy. Phones, computers and
other electronic gadgets have
certainly evolved over the past
few decades. Margaret was
delighted during her party to
receive a phone call from her
great-grandson, Scott Schiek,
who is working out in Alberta.
She was also amazed to expe-
rience her first "Face Time"
chat with two grandsons.
Michael and Scott Bannerman
are currently on tour out west
with their band, The Upside of
Maybe. They used Face Time,
an interactive computer appli-
cation that allows you to see
the caller while chatting on an
iPad or iPhone. Michael and
Scott were able to see their
Grandmother and wish her a
happy birthday while she was
looking at them and visiting
with them. When the call
ended, and Margaret was
reflecting on the interaction,
she commented, "I've lived so
long!" She thought this use of
technology was an incredible
experience which helped to
mark the special occasion.
Margaret moved to Luc -
know in 1958 when she mar-
ried Virden Mowbray. Along
with his children, John,
Jerry, Alan, and Sharyn,
Margaret has 7 children, 22
grandchildren, 40 great-
grandchildren and 9 great -
great -grandchildren. Most of
these were in attendance to
celebrate with her on Satur-
day. Margaret moved from
the River Valley Apartments
in Lucknow to R -Villa in Rip-
ley in 2009 and she moved
into Pinecrest four months
ago. She thoroughly enjoyed
spending time with her fam-
ily and friends and appreci-
ated everyone who came out
to celebrate with her. She
had all age groups at her
party from a seven week-old
great grandchild to a one
hundred year old former
neighbor and friend.
