arrived, they played a "Who/What Am
I?" game organized by Mary Ellen Foran.
After all thenew members were intro-
duced, the meeting was officially opened
with the 4-H pledge.
The members were then divided into
groups and were given the task of pre-
senting information to their fellow mem-
bers on the topics of cooking basics,
measuring techniques and tools of the
trade. The presentations were in forms of
sldts, poems and demonstrations. The
next order of business was the election of
officers. Reba Jefferson was elected as
President with Jolande Oudshoom as her
Vice President. Maisy Jefferson volun-

sen to be the Treasurer. All members
agreed on having a rotating secretary and
the meetings were given to members
who did not hold an office.
Following the election of officers, the
newly elected president, Reba Jefferson
led roll call which was "Why would you
skip breakfast? What is a good reason for
eating breakfast?" In regards to the first
question, many members answered they
are not hungry in the morning or are run-
ning late and don't have time. Members
offered many good reasons for choosing
to eat breakfast including that breakfast
cuts down on the snacks consumed dur-
ing the day, helps maintain a healthy
weight, fuels the body for the day and
helps maintain good blood sugar levels.
To take a break from sitting, members
participated in an Easter egg hunt
outside.
Next, members washed their hands
before beginning the recipes for the

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday

The first meeting of the Lucknow 4-H
Beef Club was held on Tuesday, April 15,
2014 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Holly
Holyoake. Everyone was welcomed and
we did the 4-H Pledge. This year's leaders
are Holly Holyoake, Christine MacIntyre,
Heather Barger, Tina and Cathy Dren-
nan. Next was the roll call telling our
names and how long we have been in the
club. Then we elected officers and voted
who we wanted for positions and ended
up with President: Tyler Murray, Vice
President: Stuart Higgins, Treasurer: Col-
ton Rodger, Secretary: Emily Pennington
and Press Reporter Nathan Barger.
We went through the requirements to
complete the 4-H club and the different
registration forms that are due. Project
information sheets are due before May
15. Everyone was divided into 4 teams
and the challenge was to make a struc-
ture out of toothpicks, tape and a giant
marshmallow which had to be free
standing.
The Junior and Senior members were
divided into two groups to learn about
judging. The Senior members upstairs
watched a video all about judging and
the junior members were downstairs
learning the parts of a beef animal, what
to look for and how to place animals for
judging.
Members got to share ideas of what
they would like to do for future meetings.
The meeting was adjourned and every-
one enjoyed a snack

Naturalists hold banquet and meeting
Lucknow News
Ruth Dobrensky
Last week, the Huron Fringe Naturalist
organzation held their annual banquet
and evening of fun and learning. St.
Peter's Parish hall was full of happy natu-
ralists who enjoyed a great dinner and a
wonderful evening of film and slides from
members and a guest speaker. They also
had a wonderful table full of door prizes
donated by the members.
Well it really looks as though spring is
finally here. Despite the fluctuating
weather, warm and sunny one day, cold
and rainy (or snowy) the next, daffodils
are blooming and for me, that's a sure
sign of spring.
This past weekend there were a number
of events happening in town. The Luc -
know Minor Hockey Association held
their annual banquet. It's a great way to
support our local minor hockey players
and organizers.
HAWK Theatres production of The Per-
ils of Persephone began last week, but not
to worry, if you haven't had a chance to
see it, it's on again this weekend. If you
can go by the laughter in the theatre as an
indicator of whether or not the play is
worth watching, it's really worth going to
see.
Also happening this weekend is the
town wide yard sale. As we all know, one
persons cast off could very well be
another persons treasure. Go out and find
some bargains, you'll be glad you did.

and Maisy Jefferson was chosen to be Press Reporter.
Leah Hudson then taught the members about hard and soft
red winter wheat and the different uses for the two types. She
explained how dead patches, called "winter kill',' that can cur-
rently be seen in wheat fields, are due to the harsh winter. The
leaders then passed around different wheat samples. Rebecca
briefly explained how wheat could be staged by height or by
the number of leaves. Members learned about the importance
of staging wheat before applying herbicides or fungicides. Next
Leah asked the members to name weeds commonly found in
fields. The leaders then passed around perennial weeds such
as dandelion, plantain, and common mallow. Members were
to familiarize themselves with these weeds and analyse their
roots. Kim passed around a weed identification book and
explained the importance of identifying weeds by the
cotyledon.
The names were drawn for the hats, and then Logan Curran
closed the meeting. The members then enjoyed snack pro-
vided by the leaders. The date of the next meeting at Roberts
Farm Equipment is yet to be decided.
