However, to get the real flavour of a rural commu- nity often the best ambassadors are those who live and work there. An impromptu visit to Mary's Restaurant in Lucknow on Thursday, April 16, 2014, late afternoon proved an enter- taining and informative experience. Patrons George McBride, Alex Howes, Ken Eadie and waitress Jes- sica Atkinson were invited to be the ambassadors of Lucknow. Theywere asked how they would describe Luc - know to someone who has never been here before. The pride in their home was obvi- ous. Lucknow was described as a great little town that is friendly, wel- coming, quiet and very close-knit. Atkinson was the most enthusiastic declaring, "I love it! I would hate to live in a city!' Howes agreed people are friendly "and most of them are well-mannered!' McBride has been farming in the Lucknow area for 40 years. He described it as a "strong farming area." Over the years the farms have gotten bigger as they are combined. "A fair number are still family farms, but the families are getting smaller with more land." He related that there are many Mennonite families in the area. They are very big on tile drain- age, which makes for better farming. Pork farming has grown in the area, as have the size of the pig bams, grain elevators and machinery. Howes has been a welder for 20 years with Helm Welding Ltd. and farms near Kintail. He concurs that a lot of the smaller farms have been lost and merged into bigger farms. The local sales barn, where cattle and pigs were auctioned, is no longer in operation. It is surprising to discover how many small businesses are out in the byways. Eadie operates a beef and cash crop farm west of Hollyrood. Although there have been changes, Lucknow "remains very much the same!' He emphasized that Mary's is a good restaurant, to which Atkinson added "and there is the Table of VVis- dom where I have learned every- thing!' This famous table is regularly occupied in the mornings. Atkinson says "I do everything, but my title is waitress!' She noted that this is a definite trend in the area. In businesses "people have to multi- task!' She believes this is partially Alex Howes Jessica Atkinson George McBride Ken Eadie because it is a small community, but also due to recent economic cut- backs. There are just less people working at each of the various workplaces. All mentioned the big event "Music in the Fields': When asked if this is predominantly a country music area Howes countered "I am rock and roll': All agree there is a mix of interest with live music often being cover bands that do anything. The burning question of the day was the proper pronunciation of the village name. All agreed it is Luck -no, although McBride added that "But, when you are here, you are in Luck Now."
