HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 2014-04-02, Page 22 Lucknow Sentinel • Wednesday, April 2, 2014 Distracted driving campaign ends, fines increased Huron County Ontario Pro- vincial Police (OPP) officers charged a total of 47 drivers during the recent province wide Distracted Driving Cam- paign. The week long cam- paign wrapped up on March 14, 2014. Although the cam- paign is over it certainly doesn't mean enforcement will come to a halt. Officers will continue to be on the lookout on a daily basis for those drivers that continue to put others at risk by using their cell phone or entertainment device while driving. The Provincial Traffic Safety Program (PTSP) uses a combination of enforcement, education and high officer visibility to encourage safe driving behaviour for the benefit of everyone Huron County OPP would like to remind drivers, the fines for Distracted Driving under section 78.1 of the High- way Traffic Act increased today (March 18) to $280 (this includes a victim fine surcharge and court costs). The previ- ous fine was $155. A total of 10 women came out to join in the circle, with three of them travelling from 45 miles away, just to get here and take part. It was very successful. We had a very insightful discussion on the Theme of "Spring Cleaning for the Soul" - what behaviors, attitudes, actions no longer serves us. After much time this winter to reflect (we women love to analyze things) there was much came to the surface as lessons we have learned from challenges we have faced. The best lessons come from our greatest pain. As long as we live in our "Truth" and are honest with ourselves and consciously make the shift away from negative actions and in turn improve our level of happiness in our lives. There was a "Tree of Life Meditation" and some fun activities. It was a valuable experience for all of us. We hope more women will come to join our Circle. The photo gives people the idea of what our humble tent looks like, for now. "He's one of longest serving finance ministers ever at over eight years," Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb said. "He's done a great job. He's reduced taxes for Canadians and helped get us through some tough economic times." Flaherty, who will serve the rest of his term as an MP, has said he wants to spend more time with family. He has spent more than 20 years in politics at the federal and provin- cial levels. Lobb said he could tell Flaherty was also in a lot of pain from a rare but treatable skin disorder. Flaherty said health did not factor into his decision to leave politics. Joe Oliver, Natural Resources Minister in Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Cabinet, has been named as Flaherty's replacement. Lobb called Oliver "a smart guy" who "has the credentials" to take on the position. "He's spent just about his whole life in the finance sector," Lobb said. He said Oliver has connections to Bay Street and the financial industry. "He's kind of a natural fit." Asked if he and fellow PC Party members were surprised that Fla- herty stepped down, Lobb said MPs will usually tell each other if they are planning to run again but don't usu- ally when they are not. He said he feels Flaherty had earned the right to pick the time when he would step down. Lobb said the fact that Oliver was announced as Flaherty's replace- ment almost the same day showed, in his view, that Harper and his closet colleagues had a plan in place. Lobb said Flaherty was well liked not only by his fellow Conservatives, but also by members of the media and members of the opposition parties. He said in contrast with the usual bantering that happens during question period, "The House was always quiet when he (Flaherty) answered a question!' While NDP Leader Thomas Mul- cair said Flaherty served as finance minister with strength of character and a sense of humour, he blasted Oliver as an "embarrassment" of a replacement.
