NOTES AND COMMENTS
Fifty million dollars are to be spet.t
this year in Canada by the three great
railway companies, Most of the money
comes from the old country, too. It will
flow into every eltflnnel of business, and
help to lav the ghost of hard times,
wbiolt polivioiane have conjured up,-
Londou Advertiser.
And they said there were four thous-
and unemployed is C,algary! What a
shame only one hundred and fifty of
thew appeared and asked for work' as a
remit of the mass meeting. Perhaps
the other three thousand eight hundred
and fifty had pawned their clothes and
could not appear, -Calgary Herald..
Our old friend, Mr. H, J Pettypieoe,
ex -&I, P, P has been nominated by the
Liberals of Bast Lambton for the Legis-
lature. Mr Pettypieee is publisher of
the Forest Free Press, one of the beet
weeklies in Ontario. He was a useful
:member of the Legislature and be has
'our best wishes for success in the coming
election,
The revenue from ancoession duties in
Ontario for 1907 has fallen behind 1006
by $179,438 The gross revenue for the
year was $904,662,22, but of that amount
1t to estimated that $6S,000 will be re-
binds to estates the deposits for which
have exoeeded the amount collectable
under the sliding scale, Although the
net revenue from this source has fallen
behind 1906, it has exceeded Hon. A.
Matheson's estimate by some $136,000.
In regard to the reduction of the revenue
it must be borne in mind that in 1906
the Goaderham estate paid in $619,677,
The only outstanding amounts received
daring 1907 were $180,000 from the Fol.
ford estate, and $100,000 from the Eaton
estate. The feature of the returns for
1907 is the nnnanaIly large number of
individual estates that paid duty.
Live Stock Markets.
Toronto, Jan, 14 -Last week's prices
at the City Cattle Market are holding
good and steady for this week, with the
exception of the hog market, which is
from 15c to 20o lower. Cattle prices,
however, were to -day well maintained
at the recent advances, and apparently
there are no immediate .signa of any
weakening, particularly for choice
bctoher cattle.
