CIover recovered to so e' extent from the serious.d'amage- done to it by winter exposure and spring frosts, but in the most favoured Iocal- ties the yield. does' not exceed one ton. per acre ancl the general average is much! less:., Timothy and mixed grasses were very heavy, and the utniforin re- port, .from all sections `is that no better p no has been gathered -in twenty years. Throughout the.western half of the: Province fall wheat has been remarkab ty heavy,. but . it has net sauteed . the dangers: incident to a late season of rip: enin. Owing to arank growth of straw and occasional rain storms, the. croup Iodg ctbadly in many localities just as -the rain was beginning to harden, and abo t the same time, unfortunately, it wastruck with rust. Asa consequence the sample is not generally as good as was looked far ; it is lacking in plump- ness and color. The.. worst effects fromthesecauses- are reported from the • loay lands: of the south-western, count ies froth Essex and the basing of the : Thames and Sydenham rivers. In same sections .the whole crop has been reaped and saved in good condition, but the bulk of it was either standing or in • shock was interrupted last week by a: milli storcn of several days-' duration. • • Late reports say that in many fields the grain has sprouted, but the full extent of the damage will. not be known for some tithe, The storm *as local, and confined ehiefytothe western counties. In the Georgian Say counties -a large acreage has-been saved -in • good order, ttd th lI theLake Pastures were good throughout June and the first half of July; but recently they have become parched_ and bare in many parts of.the. Province This has e pall been es ecithe case. in the - Lake'', y Ontario counties, where in some .dis- tricts Cattle have to be given• extra fod- der. ` For tIispurpose soiling came in good where it could be availed -of. Fat cattle are - scarce, particularly in the ftner.class suitable for export; and there is a, disposition to force young cattle prenatmlrely into. the market. The dai- rying interest- is. less . flourishing now than it was earlieer in .the season, and the milk supply is failing -oft The re- cent rains; however, will doubtlessmake the ,pastures . good again. . Farm laborers have been scarce, and the demand for them was increased by the general heaviness of the harvest. : Wages ran from $1.50 tO$2.56f per day, and from $25 to $,10per month with board, and, even at these high figures it was difficult to procure men. • The statistics of live stock are -as complete as could be obtained. . No es- timates have been made of. thorough= breds for sections for which returns were not received, owingto the difficul- ty of :finding an average. .Itis certain that the full number has not : been re- ported, but it is almost equally certain that some animals entered in the sehe-: dules of farmers as thoroughbreds would never obtain registration in a *Herd Book . Following are :the returns- for the the county. of Bruce : ' HOMES, n e satrap a is prone, n Ontario and St, Lawrence. and Ottawa counties the crop was badly winter - killed, and what. remains 'will yield Iess than an. average:. In the East Midland counties a -good crop will be harvested, but not equal to last years.. In• the Lake Erie counties, where some grain has been thrashed, it isfound to yield from :20 to- 53.0 bushels :to the aeere. • Spring wheat in the Easternhalf of the - Province, oviice where it is a tensiv r x elygrown,, gives promise of an abundant harvest, but in some districts it is•'lieingattack- ed by the midge, the Hessian fly , and the rust. It will be ready for reaping generally •about the 20t1 of the month. Barley is everywhere a heavy crop • and a Iarge acreage hag been grown; es- pecially in the Lake Ontario and: Mid- land counties. The grain is uniformly 'plump and: of good color,, withafew ex- ceptions where it ripened too rapidly owing to -the drought, or where it lodg- ed and rusted, In the western: counties - the yield isgood, but the harvesting sea - has been unfavorable. . - Working horses....... .. ..... 10,926 Breeding mares ..,< ' 2,323 Unbroken. horses....,. .........
