The past thirty six years have brongbt many changes in. Wing. ahem and also many ohangea in this paper. During the time of the present editor the paper has been three times ' enlarged and we have endeavored to give our readers a paper that will coma pare favorably with any paper in the ,country. E eats and all friends of the paper a happy and prosperous new year. NOTES AND COMMENTS The volume of trade between the United States and Canada Iast year reached a total of $225,000,000. Canada imported from the United States goods of the value of nearly $157,000,000 and sent into the United States Canadian produots valued at abort $68,000,000, The t wo Governments: dtd not interfere with this trade, from which eaoh draws very material additions to its revenues. In the last five years the United States exported to. Canado a total of $660,000,- "000 worth of goods, etc , receiving in the same period products of the Domin• ion worth $283,000,001 Speaking of the attitude of New Cab- inet Ministers, in the House of Commons at Ottawa the correspondent of the Lon- don Free'Presssays ;-Hon. Mr. Graham has beenn down t b y themembers m e bars of .both parties as one who will do his beat individually to run his great department for the beet interests of his oonntry, Whether he will succeed is another question. Mr, Graham has made a splen- did impression. His attitude towards critics and questioners has never shown a trace of hostility, and he has :avid a number of things already in the house with regard to railways that the opposition have joined with the gov- eranient in applauding. The November bank statement, while it shows a considerable restriction in .business, is a magnificent demonstration of the imp egnabie position of Canadian finance, The process of withdrawing money invested in New York for home use has been continued to the tune of $15,000,000. How the Canadian banks have contrived to extract $16,000,000 in cash out of New York in two months is a mystery. No ordinary person would have thought it possible, even with a search warrant and a pair of pincers However, they have done it, and it is to their Credit. The assets of the bank have decreased $15,000,000 as oompared with a year ago; their liabilities, $42,- 000,000. Such a condition of " affairs Can only mean that bank credit in Canada must shortly become easier tan.. lege the world situation is such as to overmaster the local situation.
