Seaforth resident launches nutrition program and plans to open training facility in 2016

Finally, on September 25,
Kaleda will own the building,
a specific place where intense
training will happen day in
and day out. This is a shelter
shock compared to the gym
she's used to in her garage.
Although the gym has stirred
to a large building, Kaleda Con-
nell is certain this new facility
will still have a "garage gym"
feeling to it Soon as the owner-
ship is sanctioned and final-
ized, the 26 -year-old will start
renovations and painting
immediately. Connell men-
tioned in a private message on
Facebook that if all goes well,
Degree Fitness will be up and
running by the new year or
sooner. The fitness facility will
be located at 38 Railway St. in
Seaforth with plenty of floor
space, barbells and pull up bars.
"No machines though. At
Degree Fitness, you are the
machine. It's going to be
Canadian state of the art
equipment," said Connell, a
functional fit trainer and
weightlifting trainer.
It's been a year since Connell
first launched a training session
of two clients in the comfort of
her own home. At the present
time, the Seaforth fitness fanatic
has welcomed a business with
a waiting list of approximately
more than 60 people. Before the
grand opening of Degree Fit-
ness, Connell said she's cur-
rently invested in another pro-
ject. The project, called the
"Kick Start Nutrition Challenge;
first started roughly two weeks
ago. It consists of 30 days of
healthy eating with workouts
and other targets. Right now, 55
people have signed up and
Connell said when the program
is finished, a $500 winner will
be announced in the first week
of October. All the contestants
measured their bodies and
weight. The initial idea is to
track losses and gains through a
scorecard, which is marked
daily by points.
"This challenge is a great
way to get back into the rou-
tine of healthy eating and
lifestyle after summer
ended, and kids are going
back to school," said Con-
nell. "Most people think that
you need to diet to lose
weight or get back on track,
but in reality, we need to
make it far more sustainable
than that, and our approach
is much different that what
you might think the tradi-
tional style of healthy eating
is."
While Connell admitted to
always wanting to incorporate a
nutritional plan to the fitness
program, with juggling two jobs

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
With Breast Cancer
Awareness Month being
right around the corner we
are working to transform
awareness into action.
This October, the Cana-
dian Cancer Society are
challenging our community
to take action against the
most common cancer
among Canadian women
with 1 in 9 being touched by
the disease.
• Go for Screening. If you are
50 and older, talk to your doctor
about getting mammogram.
• Get Support: Call us at
1-888-939-3333 to get infor-
mation, rides to treatment
appointments, talk to some-
one who's going through a
similar experience and join
our online community.
• Give generously:
Whether it's with your wallet
or your time, you can sup-
port the Canadian Cancer
Society in our community:
• Donate online at www.
cancer.ca
• Sell and wear pink ribbons
• Participate in ManiCURES
• Become a health
ambassador
• Volunteer with the society
• Fundraise as a cancer
fighter
• Attend Taking Steps
Against Breast Cancer in
Mitchell, Saturday, October
24, 9 a.m. to noon, Lions
Park)
Quick Facts
• In 2015, an estimated 9,800
0ntarians will be diagnosed with
breast cancer and an estimated
1,900 will die of the disease.
By 2030 the number of diagno-
ses is estimated to increase to
12,730 cases — a 30% increase.
• Today, breast cancer is the
most common cancer and the
2nd leading cause of cancer
death among Canadian women
• Today, 88% of Canadi-
ans diagnosed with breast
cancer will survive.
• In the last 20 years, the Society
invested close to $100 million
in breast cancer research, lead-
ing to earlier detection and bet-
ter therapies, which in part led
to a 44% drop in the breast can-
cer death rate since the 1980s.
• More than 26,000 lives
were saved since the mid-
1980s in Canada, thanks in
part to the Society's efforts to
increase screening rates and
our investment in research.
