Huron Expositor, 2015-09-30, Page 22 Huron Expositor • Wednesday, September 30, 2015 Huron OPP say 42 deaths in 2015 associated with unbuckled seat belts Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor According to the Huron OPP the number of deaths linked to persons not wear- ing a seat belt is increasing. The police say from January 1 -September 22 there have been 42 people killed on OPP patrolled roads because incon- sistencies of fastened seat belts. The authorities consider this a substantial jump compared to the 34 that died last year in the same time period. Subse- quently this year in Ontario from September 7-13 seven people died in car crashes and six were not wearing a seat belt, this is what authorities consider an "alarming" mishap. Since the upsurge of driv- ers and occupants in vehi- cles not obeying the law, beginning September 23 the Fall Seat Belt Campaign will launch and continue until October 9 at midnight. "Adult seat belt use is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in motor vehicle collisions. Yet thou- sands of adults still do not wear their seat belts on every trip. Not wearing a seat belt can be a fatal decision even on short, familiar journeys and at low speeds. We know that enforce- ment of seat belt laws does make a difference in getting more people to buckle up, so OPP officers will be diligent during this campaign," says OPP Deputy Commis- sioner Brad Blair, Traffic Safety and Operational Support. Furthermore the authori- ties are not only concerned with the safety of Ontarians, in a press release document by Huron County OPP media relations officer, Jamie Stan- ley, he stated in the document that fines will also be handed out to anyone who does not follow the rules. He specified drivers can be charged and face a fine of approximately $240 and two demerit points for seat belt infractions. Under the Highway Traffic Act, any person in a motorvehi- cle who is at least 16 -years -old is required to occupy a seat with a seat belt when travelling in a vehicle. Parents are prompted that passengers under the age of 16 must be correctly buclded up in a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt, whichever is suitable for their age, height, and weight. Another space opened up on Seaforth's main strip Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor Quilting is Trina's "ther- apy," especially during the hardships of life, after the death of her father, the crafty trade is what helped her cope through the saddened time. After the owner of the Cot- ton Harvest Quilt Shop, Trina 0' Rourke found out her father had cancer, to manage the situation while caring for him, she sat by his bedside doing handwork extensively. The Win This space win- ner said, "It kept my mind occupied." "My husband said at the funeral, she will get behind the sewing machine and she will not lift her head up for three days straight and that's basically what happened," 0' Rourke said at her quilt shop. She refers to quilting as an "addiction" and because of how many platforms are involved, she said the oppor- tunities are endless. "It's kind of like having a job as an X-ray technician, you can go into ultrasound, you can do MRI, you branch out, it's the exact same way with quilting," 0' Rourke said.
