Huron OPP say 42 deaths in 2015
associated with unbuckled seat belts

According to the Huron
OPP the number of deaths
linked to persons not wear-
ing a seat belt is increasing.
The police say from January
1 -September 22 there have
been 42 people killed on OPP
patrolled roads because incon-
sistencies of fastened seat belts.
The authorities consider this a
substantial jump compared to
the 34 that died last year in the
same time period. Subse-
quently this year in Ontario
from September 7-13 seven
people died in car crashes and
six were not wearing a seat belt,
this is what authorities consider
an "alarming" mishap.
Since the upsurge of driv-
ers and occupants in vehi-
cles not obeying the law,
beginning September 23 the
Fall Seat Belt Campaign will
launch and continue until
October 9 at midnight.
"Adult seat belt use is the
most effective way to save lives
and reduce injuries in motor
vehicle collisions. Yet thou-
sands of adults still do not wear
their seat belts on every trip.
Not wearing a seat belt can be
a fatal decision even on short,
familiar journeys and at low
speeds. We know that enforce-
ment of seat belt laws does
make a difference in getting
more people to buckle up, so
OPP officers will be diligent
during this campaign,"
says OPP Deputy Commis-
sioner Brad Blair, Traffic Safety
and Operational Support.
Furthermore the authori-
ties are not only concerned
with the safety of Ontarians, in
a press release document
by Huron County OPP media
relations officer, Jamie Stan-
ley, he stated in the document
that fines will also be handed
out to anyone who does not
follow the rules. He specified
drivers can be charged and
face a fine of approximately
$240 and two demerit points
for seat belt infractions. Last
year the Fall Seat Belt

A rise in seat belt related
deaths in Ontario have OPP
patrolling the roads diligently.
Campaign led to 47 drivers
and passengers' charges.
Under the Highway Traffic
Act, any person in a motorvehi-
cle who is at least 16 -years -old
is required to occupy a seat with
a seat belt when travelling in a
vehicle. Parents are prompted
that passengers under the age
of 16 must be correctly buclded
up in a car seat, booster seat, or
seat belt, whichever is suitable
for their age, height, and weight.

Quilting is Trina's "ther-
apy," especially during the
hardships of life, after the
death of her father, the crafty
trade is what helped her cope
through the saddened time.
After the owner of the Cot-
ton Harvest Quilt Shop,
Trina 0' Rourke found out
her father had cancer, to
manage the situation while
caring for him, she sat by his
bedside doing handwork
extensively.
The Win This space win-
ner said, "It kept my mind
occupied."
"My husband said at the
funeral, she will get behind
the sewing machine and she
will not lift her head up for
three days straight and that's
basically what happened," 0'
Rourke said at her quilt
shop.
She refers to quilting as an
"addiction" and because of
how many platforms are
involved, she said the oppor-
tunities are endless.
"It's kind of like having a
job as an X-ray technician,
you can go into ultrasound,
you can do MRI, you branch
out, it's the exact same way
with quilting," 0' Rourke
said.
The grand opening of the
shop was September 10.
Currently, the quilter is run-
ning classes for beginners
and experts. If you have any
questions contact 0' Rourke
at 519-600-1646.
"I have so many people
that say, I can't do that, well,
why can't you," 0' Rourke
said.
