Horticultural Society Provides Accessible Garden Boxes
Mary McLeod was a very active
member of the Seaforth & District
Horticultural Society for many dec-
ades. When she passed awaylastwin-
ter, donations were made to the
Society in her memory. Recent dis-
cussions of the value of `Gardening as
Therapy' inspired the members to use
that money as part of a project to
install accessible garden boxes at Sea -
forth Manor and Maplewood Manor.
The boxes were assembled by Nick
Barclay in his garage, and delivered to
the Manors on a sunny May morning.
Nick, Brenda Barclay and Elly
Schoonderwoerd filled the boxes with
soil as staff and residents looked on in
anticipation of future feasts! We left
the planting and maintenance of the
boxes up to the residents, and it didn't
take long for them to get plants in and
sprouting up. Tomatoes were a popu-
lar choice in both locations, and now
the residents are harvesting and
enjoying the fruits of their labours!
One of the Society's objectives is to
promote the growth of plants of all
kinds in our community. Recent pro-
jects include the pergola and garden at
Seaforth Library, and new maple trees
at Fli7abeth Parkin Egmondville. Next
on our agenda will be selling unique
flower bulbs from our booth during
Ciderfest atthe Van Egmond House on
September 27th. More details on our
website atwww.seaforthdhs.org.
MUNICIPALITY OF HURON EAST
MUNICIPAL CLASS ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT
FOR EXTENSION OF DUKE STREET & CENTENNIAL DRIVE
NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETIO
THE PROJECT:
The Municipality of Huron East is planning to extend Duke Street and Centennial Drive in the northeast portion of
the community of Seaforth in order to service adjacent lands designated for urban development. The proposed road
extensions will link Duke Street and Centennial Drive north of the Seaforth Community Hospital creating a new
intersection. Municipal servicing which will include sanitary sewers, watermains and stormwater drainage, will also
be extended in conjunction with the planned road extensions. The new roads will be constructed to an urban
municipal standard, including asphalt surfacing and curbs and gutters.
At this time, the Municipality is proposing to construct the Centennial Drive Road extension in 2016, so that the
proposed servicing extensions can be coordinated with a planned development proposal located on adjacent lands.
Municipal sanitary servicing, watermains and stormwater drainage infrastructure will be extended through the
development lands within a servicing corridor, and then extend into the newly constructed Duke Street and
Centennial Drive road allowances (as shown on the attached figure). Construction of Duke Street is tentatively
scheduled for the spring of 2017. A communal stormwater management facility, which will service lands designated
for urban development located adjacent to the planned road extensions, will be constructed in the northwest corner of
the Silver Creek development site.
THE ENVIRONMENTAL SCREENING PROCESS:
The planning for this project is following the environmental screening process set out for Schedule `B' activities
under the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) document. The Class EA process involves
consultation with the public and review agencies to ensure that the project can be carried out in an environmentally -
sound manner. The environmental assessment process has now been completed. There were no negative impacts
identified with the project that could not be mitigated.
