The Van Den Hengel's
moved to Seaforth in
1953. One man from this
specific bloodline has
devoted his life to God
and the Knights of
Columbus recently
acknowledged this
devotion.
After arriving in Sea -
forth more than half a
century ago, by 1965 Rev.
John Van den Hengel was
ordained. The Knights
believed the locals from
the area would support
the Father in his positive
ways and they did.
After receiving an
award for his 50 years in
priesthood the organiza-
tion gave him a $2,000
cheque for him to use for
whatever he believes fit.
Three weeks ago Van
den Hengel indicated to
his brother Gerry Van
den Hengel, the treas-
urer for the Knights, he
could use some money
for laptops for teachers
in Vietnam or water
well projects in Came-
roon, a country in Cen-
tral Africa. His little
brother Gerry put the
word in and made it
happen.
After giving his older
brother the donation,
who he said he's looked
up to for most of his life,
the treasurer described
the moment as "quite
awesome?'
"We gave it (to) him
and he didn't open it up
until later and then when
he did eventually open
the envelope, he said,
'wow, I did not expect
this,"' Gerry said, describ-
ing his older brother's
reaction.
Since Van den Hengel
is a member at the Priests
of the Sacred Heart, his
brother stated that the
gift will be used to sup-
port the acquisition of
computers for teachers
at an orphanage in
Vietnam.
