Two locals at a swim-a-thon raise $1200

Two 60 -plus locals raised
$1,200 by swimming at
Vanastra's Recreation Centre
on September 10.
The initial goal was for
$100, but Janet Boots and
Coun. Ray Chartrand
exceeded six -times the min-
imum entry-level fee. Boots
first started at 7:30 a.m. and
edged Chartrand out by
remaining in the pool for
approximately 15 min
longer and winning in the
competition between both
swimmers. Chartrand swam
for roughly an hour by par-
taking in the swimming
exercises.
Dripping from the swim,
Chartrand hopped out the
pool and said he's more than
happy to help out the com-
munity of Vanastra.
"I'm on the committee
here and the fundraising
committee, I just feel that
this pool is very important,
so whenever I can help out, I
jump in and help out," Char-
trand said last Thursday in
Vanastra.
Boots, 61, exercises in the
pool all year round three to
four times a week. She was
asked if she was tired from
the swim and the answer
was a simple "no," accompa-
nied by laughter.
"I have diabetes and
arthritis, it keeps me going, it
keeps me active and
motivated."
Facility manager for the
Vanastra Recreation Centre,
Lissa Berard, from Harpur-
hey, is glad to have the two
swim-a-thon fundraisers
devote their time for the
community. She explained
the large donation will be
contributed to the building's
fundraising campaign which
started last June. The build-
ing project all together will
cost roughly $350,000. All of
the funds donated are by
Huron East, Ontario Tril-
lium, outside fundraisers
and local businesses.
"They're such a valuable
asset to our facility. Janet
and Ray are both high
achievers. We hit the jackpot
when we scored them on our
committee," Berard said.
The exercise program at the pool welcomed Coun. Ray Chartrand and Janet Boots during a
fundraising event last week.
