letters to the editor
Last week I came home to Sea -
forth to visit my family and was
shocked and disappointed to see
that the lovely elm tree that used to
be on the side of County Rd 12 had
been chopped down. This tree was
a rare and perfect specimen of a
species of tree which was deci-
mated by the Dutch Elm Disease
(DED). I had always pointed this
tree out to my children when driv-
ing by, and saw its potential to sur-
vive as something remarkable. To
see it chopped down for no appar-
ent reason was disheartening and
unfortunate.
I am writing this letter to draw
attention to this great loss and in
hopes that others may not make
a similar mistake in the future. If
you own or care for land that has
It is that time of year again with
the Seaforth Agricultural Society,
volunteers are very busy getting
ready for a fun fall fair. We would
like to see more business folks
entering a truck/float for the
parade this Saturday at 10 a.m. at
the Optimist Park.
Family floats are always wel-
come or neighbours may get a
competition going with the next
street. The theme is celebrating
a surviving elm tree, you can
learn more by contacting the
University of Guelph Elm Recov-
ery Project. Scattered across
Ontario, unusually large, surviv-
ing elms are so isolated that there
is little opportunity for these
DED tolerant trees to cross polli-
nate and produce the next gener-
ation of health trees. The Elm
Recovery Project is designed as a
"dating service" for these lonely
elms. Too bad that the County or
property owner didn't see the
value in this tree. It was a beauti-
ful tree that could have helped
father the next generation of dis-
ease tolerant elms.
Sincerely,
Kate

Children love to participate in a
parade. We would like to thank all
the participants for entering in the
Seaforth Fall Parade last year and
invite anyone else who missed last
year to consider putting a business
truck/float or antique tractor in the
parade this year.
Thanks, Parade Committee.
