Brian McGavin of Walton
is proud to relate his chance
to compete with his son,
Brandon at the Canadian
Plowing Organization's
(CPO) Plowing Champion-
ship that was held August 26
to 29 at Pykeview Meadows
farm Wolfe Island, Ontario,
which is near Kingston. He is
even more proud that Bran-
don took first place at the
match in conventional
plowing.
Brandon had won schol-
arships to Olds College in
Alberta from competitions
in Junior Plowing at Ontario
matches. In 2010 he decided
to use those scholarships to
take business courses and
moved to Alberta. Brian
explains that while in col-
lege, Brandon met a girl
who meant more to him
than coming back to
Ontario, so he made Alberta
his home.
In 2014 Brandon com-
peted in the Canadian Plow-
ing Match held near Lon-
don, Ontario, ploughing for
Alberta. As it was closer to
Walton, Brian trucked in a
tractor and plow for Bran-
don to compete with.
While at the match, Brian
met a father and son team
from New Brunswick who
were competing and
thought it would be really
neat to do the same with
Brandon. Brian quipped,
"so I had to go home and get
my act in gear to be able to
compete and qualify to plow
for Ontario." He was fortu-
nate to qualify, which led to
both McGavins competing
at the Wolfe Island match
with Brandon plowing for
Alberta and Brian for
Ontario.
Brian stated that they
decided to make the match a
family affair with Brian tak-
ing his wife and Brandon
taking his girlfriend. Brian
related, "It was a neat experi-
ence to take the equipment
across on the ferry.
The CPO website states,
"The Canadian Plowing
Organization was founded in
1955 to preserve the art and
skill of competitive plowing
in Canada, to permit Cana-
dians to compete at the
world level and to promote
the most important of all
agricultural tasks, good soil
stewardship."
The McGavins arrived in
time to have two practice
plowing days. Although the
official practice day was on
Wednesday, August 26 with
all the lights and everything
set up the way it would be
for competition, they were
able to do some practice in
the fields on the Tuesday.
Plots were drawn on the
Tuesday evening to deter-
mine when and where each
competitor would plow.
Each competitor had to
plow each of the three days
from Thursday through Sat-
urday with the points being
tallied to determine the
rankings.

and Brian placed third in the Conventional Plowing class. Brandon will go on to compete for Canada at the 2016 Worlds Competition.
Senior Conventional class at
the 2015 Plowing Match saw
both McGavins in the top
three positions as follows:
1st Brandon McGavin for
Alberta, 2nd Carmen Wep-

McGavin for Ontario, 4th
Philip Keith for New Brun-
swick, 5th Mike Strotmann of
British Columbia, 6th Willy
Dunlop for Manitoba, 7th
Jennifer Keith for New Brun-
swick. Having placed first,
Brandon has now qualified
to represent Canada at the
Worlds Plowing competition
to be held in England in
2016.
Brian jokes about the final
rankings, "I must have
taught him too much when

he was a kid. He kicked my
butt." He adds Brandon was
very consistent throughout
the match. "We were com-
peting against each other,
but our family is proud of
Brandon and now we can
say that we did it together."
Brandon and his girlfriend

Sunday.
