Visually impaired teen nearly ran off the road at Goderich and Main

A driver running a red
light at the corner of
Goderich Street and Main
Street, which nearly
resulted in a visually
impaired teen being hit,
has people from Seaforth
questioning the safety of
this specific location.
"My concerns with the
main corner is the children,
especially since school will
be starting in two weeks,"
said Seaforth Coun. Bob
Fisher. "The fact that we had
two accidents, it's been hap-
pening for years, but it's get-
ting worse:'
On August 25 at a coun-
cil meeting, Fisher stood
up and voiced his opinion
relating to the busy inter-
section, which he believes
is not only dangerous to
the visually impaired like
himself, but also to all
pedestrians using the
crosswalk. The councillor
said his wife observed two
separate transport trucks
last month drive through
red lights at Seaforth's
main crossing. These
complications have made
an impact on Fisher also,
as he as well has had a
close encounter on Goder-
ich and Main.
"I heard the surge of traffic
coming north, so I stepped
off the curb and this person
was making a right hand
turn and I guess they were
looking left and not looking
to the right. I stepped off and
the next thing I know, I'm on
top of their hood," Fisher
said in a conversation over
the phone.
Fisher mentioned that
he fortunately did not sus-
tain any injuries but stated
that he "was for sure
scared" after being struck
by the vehicle. With Jason
Lamont almost being in
the same situation as
Fisher and both being vis-
ually impaired, he said he
wants something to be
changed. Currently the
speed limit is 50 km/h, but
Fisher suggested it be
reduced to 30 or 40 km/h.
Also, as suggested at coun-
cil, he agrees with the light
amber possibly being
altered to make it longer.

councilor recommended
was for a heavier police
presence.
"I have friend that lived
just west of Exeter, he put a
baby buggy on the side of the
road and the traffic would
slow down. It was just amaz-
ing how the traffic slowed
down," Fisher said.
Paul Perna, who special-
izes in orientation and
mobility for the Canadian
National Institute for the
Blind in London Ont., also
raised concerns about the
intersection. Perna, whose
charity provides community
support for Canadians who
are blind or partially
sighted, witnessed the
driver nearly collide into
Lamont during a routine
exercise. He reflected on the
near mishap and remem-
bers the day as "very
frightening."
"I think he was aware that
he was going through a red
light. There was no honk. If
Jason was alone, would he
have heard the wheels or
the engine of the car? Prob-
ably not. I think he would
have been shocked at the
closeness of this car," Perna
said.
For 25 years, Perna has
been teaching transferable
skills for people like Lamont
so they can walk the streets
without fear wherever they
go. He claims presently that
running red lights is a prob-
lem in Southwestern
Ontario.
"You would think with an
accessible signal and the
way that the town and
county have painted the
lines that drivers would be
more aware of that intersec-
tion," Perna said.
