A group of skateboarders
and BMX bicycle riders met in
Seaforth to explain their inter-
est in a potential skate park.
Skate parks are usually for
people who have an appetite
for extreme sports and they
can be built out of wood, steal
or cement. Most are equipped
with grinding rails and ramps.
Ben Henderson, 15, from Sea -
forth has been skateboarding
for three years. He inspired
the idea of a skate park being
built in Seaforth and said it
would be beneficial for sev-
eral residents in the region. A
few months back, Henderson
organized a group on Face -
book titled the "Seaforth
Skatepark Start Up," which has
become quite popular
according to the skateboarder.
Currently, there are 141 mem-
bers standing behind
Henderson.
"It's just another sport.
Hockey has arenas, soccer
has fields, but we don't have
a skate park," Henderson
said.
He said he was informed
by the town last year that if
enough residents displayed
a want for the project, that
they would build a skate
park. Judging by the positive
turnout of individuals, which
Henderson said is only a
third of the people inter-
ested. He said more people
would have been there, but
they were at work or
had other previous
engagements.
"We don't play hockey or
anything like that we play
this, we ride bikes and skate-
board;" added Henderson.
Tyler Primeau, 20, has been
riding his BMX for years. He
said "there is enough demand
for it, we're out here everyday,
obviously it's going to be used.
We ride everyday pretty much
regardless."
Presently, Primeau is

are 30-60 minutes away,
which he said is becoming
costly on gas. Primeau and
Henderson both agreed not

them a lot of money, but

they also said a skate park
project would keep the local
youths off the roads and
away from the risk of damag-
•ng public property. Accord -
ng to the two sports extrem-
sts, their hobbies are
currently negatively
stereotyped.
"I feel we have a bad rep,
from people who don't do it
(extreme sports), it probably
seems worse than it is,"
Primeau said.
