Egmondville church supports females in Kenya

Kenya is a nation of some
45 million citizens, accord-
ing to the United Nations
International Children's
Emergency Fund (UNICEF),
with approximately 46 per
cent of the population living
below the poverty line. Many
rummage for small rations
and at times it's hard for
them to simply keep clothes
on their backs. Egmondville
United Church recognizes
this.
Last Spring the church
collected 44 pairs of under-
wear and $400, which went
towards the Days for Girls
International London Chap-
ter. They ask that the
donated underwear, referred
to as kits, are coloured, as
unlike Canadians, Kenyans
do not have access to water
or laundry faculties. The
United Nations website
states that "Africa faces
endemic poverty, food inse-
curity and pervasive under-
development, with almost all
countries lacking the
human, economic and
institutional capacities to
effectively develop and man-
age their water resources
sustainably"
After receiving all funds
and underwear the special
donation was then sent to
Kenya this past April. The
non-profit Days for Girls
international, concentrates
on lasting feminine solu-
tions. By 2022 the charity is
destined to have viable
access to bearable hygiene
and women's health educa-
tion for all females in the
world.
"I think it is an eye opener
for anyone. It is important to
be grateful for what we have
and share what we can. I
hope that somehow, what-
ever we do will make a dif-
ference," commented Gayle
Coleman past chair of the
Mission Awareness Commit-
tee at the Egmondville
United Church.
Coleman's been a mem-
ber of the religious institute
since 1985 and she said they
are constantly looking for
outreach opportunities. This
particular charity was the
first of its kind for her and
the church.
"It is so important to look
beyond our little world. We
are all connected with our
brothers and sisters all over
this wonderful world we
have been gifted with," she
said.
"I believe that there are
many people that need our
help, in our community, in
Canada and throughout the
world. If we all do a little, we
can make a big difference."
Jill Johnston, the local
representative at the Days
for Girls London Chapter
brought this hygienic idea
to the church's attention
and on November 22 she
will be a guest speaker at
the Egmondville United
Church. The main purpose
for this visit is for Johnston
to enlighten the area about
the worthwhile Days for
Girls charity. An organiza-
tion since 2008 that's
empowered the creation of
about 100,000 cleanliness
kits and reached more
than 70 countries. For
