All the council members of Huron East voted unanimously on the removal and demolition of an older
building in Vanastra.
Asbestos building
in the midst of
being removed
Shaun Gregory

There is one less 'eye sore'
in Huron East as the town
council has voted unani-
mously to move forward
with the removal of a fairly
old structure in Vanastra.
This precise project is a
thorough process that could
potentially be filled with
asbestos -a natural material
that's microscopic and is
common in older buildings.
Exposure to asbestos (pre-
cisely breathing in asbestos),
is commonly believed to be
responsible for several seri-
ous and potentially fatal lung
diseases. These problems
started to occur in the 1950's
and had become quite com-
monplace in the 90's. Several
years later, it is still regularly
being found in homes and
buildings.
"Just about any building
you find in today's world will
have something that shows
up, those tiles on the outside
of the building, they were
common back in the 40s and
50's," described Huron East's
CAO, Brad Knight.
The abandoned site is the
size of about half a football
field and the demolition is
quoted at $62,800 plus HST,
by Wayne & Harold Smith
Construction. A price well
worth it said Knight, "it's in
bad shape" and he will be
more assured when the plan
begins.
"It's been in that condition
for a long time. The munici-
pality didn't have direct con-
trol over it, but they do now,
from a phone conversation
Knight told the Expositor.
"It's a real eye sore and it's a
safety hazard:'
Since every council mem-
ber agreed with the project
on October 20, Knight's two
page document reviewed in
the chambers at the last
meeting revealed WAHSC is
likely to start demolition
near the end of October.
Currently the tender/quota-
tion is being developed.
