Farmer is confident he can enhance the village of Brussels
Shaun Gregory
Huron Expositor
In Bryan Morton's house
directly behind him stands a
huge antique windmill he
refurbished converting into
shiny wooded art blades
with a red coloured frame,
which gives the rotational
piece of energy a modern
look. The love for old barns
and anything encompassing
the farm culture has gener-
ated a business blueprint
that could very well lift the
community of Brussels he
said.
A few years back Morton
came across the windmill he
revealed while giggling.
"It cost me $35," he said.
A mechanism that was a
mystery when it was first pur-
chased. "It was on a skid,
nobody knew what it was."
Being a craftsman with a dedi-
cation for these types of things,
the task that would take some
people months to finish was a
project that only took him three
weeks he added.
"Once a year we have a con-
vention, a trade fair and all of
us crazy people that collect
old windmills, get together
and we trade," Morton
explained the details to how
he obtained the old-fashioned
tool of agricultural.
On October 15, Seaforth
hosted an annual Huron East
Heritage Advisory Committee
Meeting where Morton arrived
with more than 70 pages of doc-
uments, explaining to the group
his proposal of a potential
"bank barn" that he plans to
build in Brussles next to the
Huron County Library.
He chose this specific type of
structure because it can be up
and running all year round,
"they built them that way back
in the day because it was easy to
heat, the livestock kept (it

attractions. Bryan Morton plans to build the establishment in

warm) in the winter and it was
cool in the summer;' he said.
The Heritage Committee
voted unanimously to move
forward, Huron East followed
the same as they accepted the
large barn idea at a previous
council meeting. With all his
drawings and architectural
designs spread out across the
kitchen table, he pointed out
what will go where. After eve-
rything is said and done, the
initial goal is to have a func-
tioning farmers market in the
upper hayloft, a ground level
bakery, exclusive wedding
facility and a gift shop.
"Brussels needs help, like
a lot of little towns around
here, they're dying. I thought
this would help bring the
people to Brussels,"
explained Morton in a recent
interview with the Expositor.

capable of opening a detailed

"They went to the bush with
an axe and they cut down the
tree, then they squared the
tree into timbers (all) with an
axe," Morton said.
According to Morton this is
expected to cost $500,000 to
build and the official name of
the establishment is to be called

East for the last 40 years.
"I don't belong to a church,
I haven't given back much in
my life, there comes a time
when it's nice when you give
something back to your com-
munity and Brussels is my
community," Morton said.
Charlie Hoy, chair for the
Huron East Heritage Commit-
tee was present at the meeting
where Morton voiced a com-

"It's very exciting, it could

Since ventures of this size
