What's in a genre?
Matt Recker
What kind of music do you lis-
ten to? Don't you hate being
asked that?
First of all, who among us only
listens to one genre? And how
do you categorize genres
anymore.
Rock is a vague term, as is
metal or country. The worldwide
tapestry of music is so in-depth
and so varied that these terms
are becoming useless.
As a kid one of my favorite
bands was (and still is) Mega-
deth, which I would always just
say is metal. While this is true, so
is Dragonforce and nobody can
say these bands sound the same.
This is where sub -genres come
into play, but that presents
another problem.
According to Wikipedia, Drag-
onforce is classified as "power
metal'; but what is Power Metal?
The definition says it is a "tradi-
tional metal with speed metal,
often within symphonic context':
That's fine, but Megadeth is clas-
sified as speed metal, but NOT
power metal. Buy why not? It's
speed, traditional, and any fan of
Megadeth will tell you that many
of there somes definitely qualify
as symphonic (symphony of
destruction anyone).
What about other genres like
Country? Sounds simple
enough. But what about blue-
grass, country soul, country
rock, outlaw, trucker, or alterna-
tive country?
That's another word that con-
fuses me when it comes to clas-
sifying music. Alternative. Alter-
native to what? The term came
about in the 80s to describe an
alternative to the sound of the
time. it's 2015, the 80s sound is
long dead and now alternative IS
the mainstream so what is it an
alternative to?
Pop rock? It's a delicious
candy but what does it mean to
music? Wikipedia calls it
" a music genre which mixes a
catchy pop style and light lyr-
ics': You just defined Pop as
"music with a pop style", that's
cheating by definition. I still
have no idea what this broad
genre means.
Then there are bands that
defy classification, like my
hero Frank Zappa. Zappa had
such an eclectic range of
sounds that putting a label on
his work is pointless. In fact he
deserves to be in a genre all
his own, but now I'm being
biased.
When anyone asks me what
music I listen to, I'll rattle off a
handful of bands that I like.
Labels for music in the broad
sense work for classifying a
radio station or grouping
bands in the loosest ways
based on their sound, but
when it comes to personal use
ditch the genre and just listen
to what makes your ears
happy.
