Huron East man HEAT members furious with council,
has police on an resulting in the interruption of the chambers
off-road, wild
goose chase

A 22 -year-old male from
Huron East is in jail after
making a getaway and evad-
ing police by driving off-road
through ditches and soybean
fields.
On October 4 the Huron
County OPP observed a Chev-
rolet
hevrolet Silverado at the intersec-
tion of Brandon Road and Ethel
Line. After triggering the lights
and siren to pull the vehicle
over, the driver continued with-
out any intent of stopping.
As police were in pursuit it
seemed as if the motorist
might pull over, nevertheless
the male decided to take the
hunt cross-country and drove
into the ditch subsequently
driving into a local farmer
field, where he eventually got
stuck. The driver then bailed
out the truck and fled the
scene on foot and could not
be found by authorities.
A short time later a resi-
dent in the area called the
police stating a suspicious
man had arrived on their
doorstep, so the Huron OPP
responded to find the sus-
pect in a neighbour's vehicle
after the initial caller
rejected the alleged offender.
Police said the Huron East
man had convinced the
neighbour to drive him back
to his home, but the officers
intervened before he could
do so. They placed the sus-
pect under arrest.
Additionally, a further
investigation revealed the
Silverado was reported sto-
len earlier in the week. To
make matters worse for the
male, he was serving a pro-
bation verdict with a stipula-
tion to obey a curfew, which
he was not following.
The man has been charged
with the following crimes:
Possession of Property
Obtained by Crime Under
$5,000
Flight While Pursued by
Police Officer
Two counts of Mischief
Under $5,000
Two counts of Fail to
Comply with Probation

At one point during the meeting, the
mayor warned the group if the outbursts
continued they would have to leave
Shaun Gregory

Mayor Bernie MacLellan
was duty-bound to strike his
wooden gavel against the
desk to demand order fol-
lowing the outbursts by
HEAT members at council.
During the reports and rec-
ommendations of municipal
officers relating to HEAT's
presentation regarding St.
Columban Wind Project pro-
tocols, the members said they
felt council did not spend
enough time to review their
particular problem, involving
the noise of wind turbines.
They also wanted a response
from an EPR posting which
they believe is rather easy to
understand compared to
what they said council called
"too technical."
In addition, they
attempted to explain to
council they had been
reviewing the wrong report.
The secondary statement is
the document HEAT said is
the one, which is easier to
understand. The group
against turbines were aggra-
vated and decided to speak
out of turn in the council
chambers.

between us and the public at
this point," Huron East
Mayor Bernie MacLellan,
replied to the HEAT mem-
bers who interrupted
council.
Jeanne Melady, whom
previously lived by the pur-
ported loud turbines, raised
her voice to the mayor and
said, "This is not a debate,
but it is a clarification that
the report not be submitted
as it is written because it is
inaccurate:'
Keeping his composer
MacLellan told the group
once again to not speak out
while the meeting was in
session or they would be
requested to leave the prem-
ises, explaining to the main
HEAT correspondents talk-
ing, which were Gerry Ryan
and Melady. He added
"because this (is) not the
proper process" to do so.
After a few minutes the
council attempted to carry
on with normal proceedings,
but the irritated pair contin-
ued to address council
regarding what they consid-
ered to be inconsistencies
within council. The sound of
the mayor's gavel thumped
after he told the group once
again to "stop interrupting
the council meeting at this
time, we have moved on to
the next topic."
"If you want to have a del-
egation with council, then
please file the proper paper
work," MacLellan said.
The anti -turbine group of
about ten then left and
council continued. Outside
the meeting room huddled
up in a circle the crowd
voiced to the Expositor their
concerns about this situa-
tion that has been going on
since 2010.
Referring to the council of
Huron East, long time HEAT
member Ryan said, "Another
case of we'll do nothing and
we'll look like we're trying to
do something."
Huron East CAO Brad
Knight responded to HEAT's
presentation they conducted
at the last council meeting
on September 22 in a form of
a manuscript, available on
the Huron East website. It
acknowledged the HEAT
group as followed:
Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor
"Council is aware that the
municipality has limited
involvement in the regula-
tion of this project as it was
permitted and constructed
in accordance with the pro-
vision of the Green Energy
Act and must comply with
noise regulations as
enforced by the Ministry of
the Environment," Knight
stated in the document.
"The municipality should
not be viewed as the only
point of contact or main
point of contact and resi-
dents should be encouraged
to contact the company
directly."
Melady said she plans to
fill out a request form to del-
egate at the next Huron East
council meeting.
"My issue is to get the facts
straight, be honest in the
community, be transparent,
don't try to make a lot of red
tape about this,' she said
