Brian McGavin
from Walton is
headed to the
Canadian Plowing
Championships.
Paul Dodds placed third this year and is invited to
the Canadian Plowing Championships. Last year
he competed in France at the world competition.
IP
M
Kevin Haney, from the Seaforth area is one of 13
men who attended IPM near Cornwall.
Qualifying
Huron County saw 4 of the
13 area plowmen attending
the IPM near Cornwall last
week, qualify to compete at
the Canadian Plowing Cham-
pionships near Ottawa in
2016. Brian McGavin of Wal-
ton once again earned the
right to plow at the Canadian
match and, if successful,
advance to the World Cham-
pionship competition. He
was reserve in the Ontario
Senior Tractor Plowing
Championship class using a
two -furrow conventional
plow, in a class of 14. In
August, Brian, husband of
Shelley, placed third when he
competed against his son,
Brandon, in the Canadian
Plowing Championships.
Brandon came out on top and
is the 2015-2016 Canadian
Champion. Next year, he will
travel to England to compete
at the World competition.
Paul Dodds of R. R. #1, Sea -
forth is the only other Huron
County resident to have
plowed at this level, showing
off his skills in France last year.
Paul competed against Brian
this year and placed third.
Other Huron County men
plowing in this class were Ste-
ven Haney and Kevin Haney
of the Seaforth area, former
Canadian match competitors.
The number of plowmen who
have competed at, or who
have earned the right to com-
pete at, a Canadian Champi-
onship, however, is astound-
ing and this number has now
increased as three new indi-
viduals from our county are
added to this list, along with
Brian McGavin, after 'doing
our county proud' at the Finch
IPM. Troy Leeming, age 16, of
R. R. #4, Seaforth and Shawn
Ryan, also age 18, of R. R. #3,
Dashwood both of whom
plowed in the junior conven-
tional tractor class, using two -
furrow plows (juniors aged
16-20 years are not eligible to
advance to the World Cham-
pionships), together with Ger-
ald Corbett of R. R. #1, Exeter,
who competed in the Ontario
Senior Tractor class with a
reversible plow, will now
come up against some stiff
competition next year at the
Canadian competition. Bri-
an's brother, Jeff McGavin
from Walton, husband of
Shannon, also a former Cana-
dian match competitor, made
a great showing at the recent
match and was reserve in a
two -furrow tractor class, a
class where competitors are
unable to advance to the
Canadians. Jeff inched back
into the competitive plowing a
couple of years ago, after bow-
ing out for 22 years, and may
try plowing with the "big
boys" in the championship
class again, perhaps next year.
Proud parents, Neil and Marie
McGavin, attended the IPM.
Lucas Townsend, age 13, was
champion in his tractor class of
nine, aged 10-15 years, using a
conventional two-furrowplow.
This is his fourth IPM competi-
tion. Parents, Matt and Aimee,
and brother, Mitchell
Townsend of Blyth, together
with grandparents George and
Ruth Townsend of R R. #4, Sea -
forth, attended the sunny IPM.
Grandpa George coached him
during the four days of IPM
competitive plowing and again
on Saturday when several area
4-H Sodbusters competed.
Lucas placed second that day.
Jacob Gulutzen, age 14, of R.
R. #1 , Walton was also a keen
IPM competitor at Finch, as
were other IPM plowers and
fellow 4 -Hers, Zachery Doerr
and Shawn Steeper. John Dek
roon, ahorse plowman (jointer
plow) from R. R. #1 Dublin
placed third in his class.
Donald Dodds of R. R. #1,
Seaforth, an Ontario Plow-
men's Association judge,
who travelled to the Corn-
wall area with his wife Maja,
had a very challenging, but
rewarding week at the IPM.
Ursina Studhalter of R. R.
#2, Blyth, Huron's Queen of
the Furrow for 2014-2015,
represented our county well
at the match when compet-
ing for the Ontario Queen of
the Furrow title, along with
24 other competitors.
Also supporting the Huron
plowmen were O.P.A. Cana-
dian Plowing Organization
representative Graeme
Craig, and his wife Helen,
together with Huron's mem-
ber of the 2015 O.P.A. Advi-
sory Council for Zone 3,
Steve Corbett.
Huron will host the IPM in
two years at Walton and our
chairperson for this event,
Jacquie Bishop, and her hus-
band Kevin, wearing the
souvenir fashions set up for
sale in Finch by 2017 souve-
nir chair Allan Carter and his
wife Karen and some of their
committee members, did a
fine job of promoting the
upcoming match.
