Shaun Gregory MADD representative Neil Cowan speaks to the Grade 7-8 at St. James Catholic School November 19. Four Canadians die every day from impaired driving says MADD, they came to Seaforth to shrink those numbers Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor Mother Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) said four people die each day in Can- ada from people who choose to get behind the wheel impaired. Represent- atives from MADD have come to Seaforth again this year to try and put those numbers to zero. MADD representative Neil Cowan spoke to the Grade 7-8 students from St. James Catholic Ele- mentary School in the gymnasium. He began with a presentation fol- lowed by a 40 -minute powerful video about drinking and driving. After the video finished he answered questions and gave the youth useful tips and educated them about intoxication and drug use while operating or being a passenger of a vehicle. Cowan is one of seven representatives in the nation to do these particu- lar presentations and his service wasP rovidedfor free thanks to the MADD sponsors. He said he knows he's not exactly saving lives, but this is at leastrovidin youngsters P g with a message. "We're talking to them hopefully before they're in those situations, where they can start making that change at home and talk- ing to their parents," stated Cowan. The principal of St. James Catholic Elemen- tary School, Karen Tigani was in attendance during the MADD presentation and she said that these functions happen every fall. The school plans to keep this awareness going for years in the foreseea- ble future. Tigani was shocked when she heard how many Canadians die daily from drivers under the influence. She believes this is `completely pre- ventable' and feels the services MADD provides will reduce those numbers. "If we could be the peo- ple that initiate that con- versation for those who haven't already had it, then that's really impor- tant because I don't want to see anybody get hurt,' she said. "Nobody should be drinking and driving or drugging and driving." According to Statistics Canada, since 1921, driv- ing impaired has been continuously recognized g criminal occurrence in Canada. Regardless of a substantial drop in the drunk driving rate since the mid 80s, the illegal act is the leading cause of criminal death in Canada.
