It's been two -decades of cross walking for the Seaforth resident. Cross -walker- staple to the Seaforth community for 20 years Shaun Gregory Huron Expositor In 1991 Joanne strolled in the town hall to apply for a cross - walking employment opportu- nity. Flash forward, 20 years later, and she's still directing traffic. "I thought I would try it," said Joanne Boyd from her usual inter- section at Franldin Street and Main Street North in Seaforth. Equipped with an orange pylon, a reflective vest and two stop signs, Boyd safely guides the children from the Seaforth Public School three times daily for a total of 15 hours weekly. She ini- tially was employed with St. James Catholic Elementary in the 90's and her starting wage was $6.85. Currently Boyd makes dou- ble that at a rate of $12.89 an hour. She said chuckling; you know you've been doing an occu- pation for a longtime when you crossed your children who are now adults. "I didn't know how long it would be, but I'm still here," she said after stopping traffic on November 11. This calling is something she takes pleasure in and it's a great way to 'get out' and enjoy some fresh air said Boyd. "I lost my husband four years hilf 41101114 CA coil fa fik. When the Expositor asked Boyd how she knew when the 20 -year mark was approaching? She replied, "It's not hard to forget, it's Remembrance Day:' Boyd said she's not sure what the future holds in this two -decade career, but plans to keep at it as long as she can. To date Boyd has only missed five days of work. "I like the kids, the kids always ask when I'm not there, how come you weren't there today," com- mented Boyd. The weather is getting colder now, so Boyd said she will be extra cautious directing the kids around the neighbourhood, during the winter months.
